Best feet forward for Sunrise and diabetes

Well more than 150 persons took part in the 2012 Cayman National Bank Milestone 5k Run/Walk which was conducted at Camana Bay on Saturday,7 January. The event benefited the Cayman Islands Diabetes Charitable Trust and the  Sunrise Adult Centre.

Due to a miscommunication concerning the start time, several participants arrived after most of the field had set off.  Visitors, Ashley and Chris Estwanik from Bermuda, were among this latter group. Nevertheless, these two international competitors took off in fine fashion to weave their way through the large group of entrants ahead of them.

As the finish line appeared at the end of the final straightaway,Chris overtook Chadwick Webster, the only competitor he had not yet passed, to claim victory. His posted, but not actual personal elapsed time, was 18:13, with Chadwick runnerup in 18:55.

Tom Gammage finished third in the men’s division with a 19:15 mark.

Meanwhile, Ashley Estwanik had threaded her way through the crowd quickly enough to gain third place overall just behind Chadwick and ahead of Tom, clocking 18:57.

Second place among the ladies was garnered by first-time visitor, Lindsay Pierson, from Lee’s Summit, Missouri who has run the middle distance events for Kansas State University and the University of Oklahoma.

Julie-Anne Pearson took third-place lady honours with a  time of 21:20.

Cayman National Bank awarded a number of random prizes to lucky recipients.
