OTTAWA, Canada — Antigua and Barbuda and Canada took a further step in strengthening relations between the two countries on Monday when Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, met with Antigua and Barbuda’s non-resident High Commissioner, Sir Ronald Sanders.

Sanders presented a letter from Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, to Trudeau.

The Antigua and Barbuda high commissioner and the prime minister discussed a number of matters of interest to both countries, including the effects of climate change and global warming. Trudeau assured Sanders of the Canadian government’s commitment to working with Caribbean countries on combating this major global challenge.

The recent requirement for visas for Antigua and Barbuda passport holders to travel to Canada was also discussed. Sanders put a proposal to Trudeau for a mechanism to issue visas that might be less burdensome and more time saving than the present arrangement. The prime minister undertook to request his officials to look into the proposal.

Canada and Antigua and Barbuda have a long history of friendship and cooperation at both the bilateral and international levels. Trudeau and Sanders agreed that the traditional close relations between the countries are a strong basis for exploring new ways of cooperation.
