A night of romance in Grand Cayman

Last Sunday (2), I was one member of the large audience who spent a very romantic evening with Steve Higgins and his friends April Marr and DahliaWynter.

The title of the concert provided by these three wonderful singers was “Celebrating Romance” and it certainly was an evening of romance.

It was held at The Marriott Hotel and my only complaint was the lack of floral decoration on the stage and there was no flood lighting.

It was due to the quality of the singing and the entertaining conversations by Mr. Higgins between the songs that stopped the aforementioned lack of lighting and décor being a distraction. Higgins is billed as a musician, public speaker, actor, director and producer. That showed.

The vast majority of the love songs were from musicals like “Sound of Music” and “West Side Story” plus old standards from the likes of Frank Sinatra. There was also a very fine rendering of the Charlotte Church/Josh Groban duet “The Prayer” that Mr. Higgins incorrectly attributed to Andrea Bocelli…. To be fair Bpcelli did sing it with both Celine Dion and Katharine Mcphee. I had to research that one.

Sandwiched in the middle of the concert were three Caribbean folk songs – two were Jamaican. All three were well known to the audience who even joined in.

If the three singers weren’t enough entertainment there was also a dancer, Amaya whose graceful dancing matched her beauty. She was in the last five who were bidding for the title of Miss Jamaica. That contest took place the night before.

The concert was a fund raiser for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens’ Breast Cancer Awareness Programme.

There were many sponsors from the local community and Mr. Higgins went to great pains to make sure they were well recognised.

The audience gave the performers a much deserved standing ovation.

When Steve Higgins and Friends return to Grand Cayman I will be first in line for a ticket.
