NEW EVENT: Qatar, kafala & the World Cup

From Miriam Karmali, Freedom United

As the 2022 Qatar World Cup draws nearer, systematic labor rights abuses in Qatar are under the spotlight.

Tune in to a special event with migrant workers’ rights activist and blogger Malcolm Bidali and human rights and migrant workers’ rights expert Nicholas McGeehan next Thursday April 28 at 10am EST (3pm BST, 4pm CEST) as we explore what still needs to change to ensure migrant workers are better protected from modern slavery.
Register here!

We’re excited to be joined by Malcolm Bidali, a migrant workers’ rights advocate who experienced exploitative work conditions in Qatar first-hand, and Nicholas McGeehan who is a leading advocate on migrant workers’ rights to explore the reality for migrant workers on the ground in Qatar.

We’ll be exploring questions such as:

  • Have reforms to the kafala system gone far enough?
  • Are legal reforms sufficient to improve conditions for workers?
  • How does the kafala system continue to impact workers in the country?
  • What still needs to change before the World Cup to ensure migrant workers are protected from forced labor and exploitation?

This is a perfect opportunity to ask our expert speakers about what is happening in Qatar and what we can do to keep holding the Qatar government, and FIFA, accountable. So make sure to register here and send in your questions for the panel!
