8 arrested in beating death of American tourist in Greece

From WN

Eight people have been arrested in Greece, two being charged with murder, after a 22-year-old African-American tourist was beaten to death after an encounter in a bar on the island of Zakynthos, according to National Public Radio.

Bakari Henderson of Austin, Texas, was beaten by a group of at least ten people outside a bar on the popular Greek island and died on Friday.

The arrests were announced over the weekend for the beating death of Henderson, who was a recent graduate of the University of Arizona.

Henderson suffered severe head injuries during the beating and a full autopsy report is expected within the next few days.

His family released a statement saying, “As you can imagine, our family is devastated by the recent loss of our beloved son Bakari Jaward Henderson…Bakari loved spending time with family and friends, traveling, and meeting new people. He was a big thinker and enjoyed coming up with new business ventures. Bakari was an inspiration to all he met. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.”

“Bakari was in Greece working on a photo shoot to launch his new clothing line when the unbelievable tragedy occurred,” Henderson’s family said in the statement, according to a reporter Quita Culpepper at KVUE in Austin.

One of his friends from the University of Arizona described Henderson as a “peacemaker,” and another friend saying that the bar fight story “just didn’t fit Bakari’s nature.”

Athens newspaper Kathimerini said that a fight broke out in the bar after a “petty dispute over someone setting their drink down on a table occupied by a different group” and a group of patrons ganged up on Henderson.

But another report of the incident from CBS news with witness accounts said that Henderson and his friends took a selfie with the waitress, which angered one of the bouncers.

“Police say at least 10 people followed Henderson out of the bar, including the bouncer and another employee,” CBS News reports. “They are accused of beating Henderson and leaving him unconscious in the street.”

Two men, a British bouncer of Serbian origin, and a Greek employee of the bar were charged with murder. The other six men arrested in connection with the case were also from Serbia.
