7 tips for good pet care at home – UPDATE

First published November 11 2022

According to the 2017-2018 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 68% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to approximately 84 million homes. And those numbers continue to grow every year. Pets have become an important part of our families, and we are increasingly eager to provide them with the best possible care.

But what does it mean to provide “the best possible care” for our pets? What are the most important things we can do for them at home? Below are seven tips for good pet care which will help you create a safe and healthy environment for your furry friends.

1. Provide a Balanced Diet

The first step in providing good pet care is ensuring your furry friend eats a healthy diet. Pets need a balanced diet just like we do, consisting of protein, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, and essential vitamins and minerals.

The easiest way to provide a balanced diet is by buying commercial pet food designed for their breed and age group. Many high-quality pet food brands are also available online or at specialty stores.

It’s important not to overfeed your pet or give them too many treats, as this can lead to obesity and other health problems. Instead, try to stick with a regular feeding schedule and only give them treats as rewards for good behavior.

2. Keep Your Pet Well-Groomed

Proper grooming is not just about keeping your pet looking good but is also crucial for their overall health and well-being. Make sure to brush your pet regularly to remove dirt, tangles, and excess hair. This will also help distribute natural oils in their fur and keep it shiny and healthy.

Depending on the breed and type of pet, they may also need regular baths or trimming of their nails. A rose gold pair of scissors is ideal for pet grooming at home, but it’s also important to seek professional grooming services at least once or twice a year. It’s important to stay on top of these tasks, as neglecting them can lead to discomfort or even medical issues for your pet.

3. Provide Adequate Exercise

Like us, pets need regular exercise to stay in shape and maintain physical and mental health. It’s essential to provide them with a daily outlet for energy, whether taking them on walks or playing fetch in the yard. Regular exercise can also help prevent behavioral issues, such as excessive barking or destructive behavior. It’s also a great bonding experience for you and your pet.

4. Ensure Proper Identification

There are many ways to ensure your pet has proper identification, but the most common and affordable method is using a collar and ID tag. Make sure the collar fits properly and isn’t too tight or loose, and attach an ID tag with your contact information on it. This will help someone return your pet if they ever get lost.

In addition to a collar and ID tag, it’s also a good idea to have your pet microchipped. This small chip is inserted under their skin and can be scanned to retrieve your contact information. It’s essential to choose the type of identification best suited for your pet and make sure it is updated regularly with your current contact information.

5. Provide Adequate Shelter

All animals need to have a warm, safe place to sleep at night, and this is especially true for pets. A proper shelter can protect them from the wind, rain, and snow and keep them out of the sun during summer.

Many different types of pet shelters are available on the market today, so it’s important to choose the one best suited for your needs. Some factors you should consider when selecting a pet shelter include the following:

  • The size of the shelter
  • The type of material
  • The insulation
  • The portability

6. Visit the Vet Regularly

Regular check-ups and vaccinations are essential for your pet’s overall health. It’s also a good idea to schedule routine dental cleanings to prevent gum disease and other potential problems. In addition to regular vet visits, it’s important to watch for any changes in your pet’s behavior or health. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to take them to the vet for a check-up.

7. Provide Mental Stimulation

Like us, pets need mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Make sure they have plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained and consider enrolling them in obedience training or agility classes.

It’s also important to spend quality time with your pet daily. This could be simply playing with them or taking them on walks, but the important thing is that they receive attention and stimulation from their owner.

Following these tips for good pet care at home can ensure a happy and healthy life for your furry family members. And remember, consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health. They are the experts and can help guide you in providing the best possible care for your pet.
