Walkers Art Club (Teens)

Starting 9 January 2014 – Registration is now open.

For ages 13-18 taught by Chris Mann every Thursday afternoon 3:45 PM -5:15 PM. The course is free including materials. Limited to 15 students!

The club will be particularly enjoyable and useful to young people who have a real love of art and would appreciate the opportunity to develop their skills further. Students will enjoy developing their artistic skills under the guidance of an experienced art teacher. They will learn about contemporary and modern art while working with a variety of media. Students will also be encouraged to enhance their art portfolios – contributing to their school work and exam preparation.Thanks to the kind sponsorship of Walkers this club is free, but advance registration is required to secure a place. Drawing

Classes begin 11 January 2014 – Registration is now open.

Taught by Gabrielle Wheaton every Saturday morning 10:45 AM – 1:15 PM

$198 members (non-members $220)

This class is a beginner’s drawing class, designed to teach those who want to learn the basic, classical drawing skills from the ground up. Students will learn foundation drawing skills, from sharpening a pencil to making a form appear 3-dimensional. The aim is to teach the students to see, by teaching how to measure proportions using the “Sight-Size” method, the use of negative shapes for correction and for refining a sketch, and the use of light and dark shapes to bring form to the work.

New Cine Club

Ever wanted to visit Europe? From January you can visit six European countries without leaving Grand Cayman!

The next season of Cine Club films on show are popular, award winning features from France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Austria, and Russia and cover a variety of genres including comedy, romance, action and drama.

Cine Club gift memberships make for fabulous gifts for movie-lovers. The season begins on Monday, 13 January with Les Intouchables, an uplifting comedy about friend ship and human possibility that broke box office records across France.

The season also features the multi-award winning drama Amour, recipient of an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film, the Palme d’Or and four European film awards. There is fun, action and clever film-making in the German movie Run Lola Run, while Mermaid tells the tale of a green-haired girl moving to Moscow who believes she has the power to make wishes come true.

Films are screened every other Monday evening at 7:00 PM at the National Gallery Dart Auditorium. Cine Club membership gives you access to this season’s six meetings, refreshments and film handouts. Membership is $50 for 6 meetings or $10 per movie (drop-in). A reduced rate is available for National Gallery members.

New Volunteers Jobs for 2014

We’re revamping our volunteer programme to include some new volunteer positions. If you’re looking for ways to give back in 2014 you’ve come to the right place. We couldn’t do the work that we do without the support of our volunteers. Thank you to everyone to volunteered in 2013 and we look forward to working with you in 2014.

Some of the major areas we will need help with at the beginning of 2014 are with the membership drive and reception in the lower exhibition hall. We’re also looking for photographers, archivists, event planners, ambassadors, editors, the list goes on. In addition to these important volunteer positions we will also be hosting a number of Gallery programmes, openings and events and will need assistance as we move through 2014.

Public Art – Sculpture Competition

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is pleased to announce a public art – sculpture competition supported by the Water Authority – Cayman to celebrate their 30th anniversary. All eligible artists are invited to enter proposals for a public sculpture or installation at the entrance roundabout of the NGCI’s new building located on the Esterly Tibbetts Highway. The winning project will receive complete financial assistance for the execution of the final work as well as a CI$10,000 cash prize.All proposals can be submitted to the National Gallery between Monday, 27 January 2014, 9:00 AM Eastern Standard Time (EST) and Friday, 31 January 2014, 5:00 pm (EST).

Sculpture of the week…

French artist VINCENT MAUGER is best known for his large scale installations created with construction materials (wood, concrete blocks, bricks, metal or polystyrene), which look like fractal landscape and topological folly taken from a nature that could have been appropriated by futuristic technology. Having attended the Regional Schools of Fine Arts in Angers and Nantes, VINCENT MAUGER focuses on drawing, sculpture and installation in situ.

School Tours

Schools can now book a tour for the new exhibition Our Story of Art. NGCI Active Learning Sessions are also available. These sessions explore the National Collection of art and covers different areas of the National Curriculum.

Both of these programmes are FREE for local schools, but must be booked in advance.

Group Visits

The National Gallery welcomes group visits. Contact us in advance to organise a guided tour or educational package.

Gallery Gift Shop

Aston Ebanks t-shirts available at the Gallery for $25

The Gift Shop is located in the National Gallery’s lower exhibition hall. Proceeds from the Gallery Gift Shop help to fund our exhibitions and education programmes.
