UWC Cayman Islands launches summer camp for teens

bg_cached_resized_31b43fb41974554ba9720079ccc0c19bThe United World Colleges (UWC) Cayman Islands National Committee is pleased to announce it will launch a new ‘short programme’ 6th – 9th August in Grand Cayman. Through this four-day, three-night summer camp, the volunteer organisation will raise greater awareness of the UWC mission and bring young people together for an important cause.

Toward a Sustainable Future aims to educate, equip and empower participants to make positive changes in their personal lives, homes and communities. The short programme will focus on all aspects of sustainability, discussing important topics like biodiversity, climate change, the marine environment, food security, and recycling. In each of these areas, local experts will give a local and global perspective on the issues and activities will provide opportunities for hands-on learning and unique experiences.

A wide variety of UWC short programmes are hosted each summer by national committees and colleges that form part of the global educational movement. Focusing on specific UWC values such as leadership, international understanding and sustainability, these initiatives seek to expose more young people to the common mission of using education as a force to unite people for peace and a sustainable future.

To apply to be a participant, students must be resident in the Cayman Islands, aged 13-16 at the time of the course, and passionate about sustainability and making a positive difference in their communities. Spaces are very limited and applications will be due on Friday, 5th June 2015.

The first companies to confirm sponsorship of the programme are platinum sponsor Greenlight Re, gold sponsor Dart Enterprises and silver sponsor Cayman National Bank. The Wyndham Reef Resort will also donate the accommodations and facilities to host the short programme. This community support will allow tuition fees to be highly subsidised and full scholarships will also be available to at least half of the participants in order to maximise diversity. Additional contributions from sponsors will fund the charitable foundation’s scholarship programme for Caymanian scholars at two-year UWC colleges around the world.
