The Editor Speaks: Why do I enjoy GOT when it shows everything I loathe?

I loathe foul language, I hate violence (except boxing) and I am very uncomfortable at watching explicit sex.

HBO’s Game of Thrones (GOT) incorporates all three.

Yet I watch and enjoy the programme even if I cringe at the three elements that make up probably 40% (and perhaps I am underestimating this) of the television show.

Last night’s (Sun 6) episode delivered on a big promise with, in my opinion, its most masterful battle scenes ever. Better even than anything I have seen on the small screen and can certainly tie and even better most on the big screen I have seen.

HBO have put together a 14 minute video that you can watch how this amazing battle scene was made at: http://io9.gizmodo.com/this-14-minute-video-detailing-last-nights-game-of-thro-1797595950

It is impressive. The footage had to be shot to simulate a fast moving dragon. There was one special effect that involved burning 20 people in one single shot!

So there we are, with just this one battle scene GOT was brutal. There were men on fire, dying grotesque deaths.

Therefore why did I enjoy it?

It is because of the masterful story telling, the superb acting and incredible sets. And the scene last night showed that even though the dragon the heroine Dany has can wreck havoc on an enemy it is not invincible. Her enemy has built a ballista that can cripple and kill a dragon. And in the episode last night the ballista worked and did bring the dragon down. If one of these machines can, imagine a dozen or so.

I personally feel GOT is so brilliant it does not need the foul language and very sickening sex scenes that involve rape. I have heard people from my church say they don’t watch GOT because of that. So there is a large audience lost.

Do the vast majority of GOT’s audience watch it because of the foul language, sex scenes, etc? I don’t believe so.

Like me they watch it because GOT is exciting and different from anything we have seen on television before. I say different because it is executed so brilliantly and as it is a long series on television we have gotten to know the characters so well and not just the leads.

It has shocks and surprises and nothing you want to believe will happen in the plot is a safe bet. It is often so far less than 50%.

That’s why I enjoy GOT even though I shouldn’t.
