The Editor Speaks: The best

Colin Wilsonweb2The Onetainement website – “Your number one source of Ghana latest news, entertainment news, sports and world news” has stated “A Technical Committee made up of experts from reputable International Civil Service Organisations and Think Tanks” have adjudged our premier as the Best Prime Minister in the World.

We are very happy to report it although confirmation anywhere else on the World Wide Web is nowhere to be found except one that refers like us back to the Onetainement story.

The United Nations Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC) made the decision “during their annual review which was published on July 22, 2016.”

The ECOSOC website makes no mention of it and the Onetainement statement of “A Technical Committee made up of experts from reputable International Civil Service Organisations and Think Tanks” is more than a little ambiguous..

But let’s not go that route. Some people somewhere in the world think our premier from this tiny country is the best in the world and I applaud that.

Congratulations premier.

It is without doubt the Cayman Islands is one of the places in the world that has the best beaches, and the best diving and the best stingray city, and one of the best climates, some of the best coral reefs, the best crystal clear waters, the best marine life, and, and, and ……… Oh and the best place nearest to Hell.

Living here is a real blessing and we should not take it for granted.

Being the best, however, is not so newsworthy as being bad – the worst. And what is the reason for that?

I have seen a lot of opinions on this and all agree bad news is more newsworthy.

One only had to listen to Donald Trump’s acceptance speech to see the impact of that. Hilary Clinton will be fighting a lost cause to preach a different tune. People pay a closer attention to news of violence and suffering and threats to our lives because they stimulate more responses in the human brain.

People who are the best aren’t so interesting. Whether you prefer Clinton to Trump who presses your button the most?

If you pay close attention to the circumstances of another persons death or injury, or a threat or worst things to come, you can better learn to avoid the same fate and if your Saviour (Trump) is persuasive enough, who would you vote for?

It is a fact of life, unfortunately, that we have the good news that our premier is the best but how many will actually believe it?

Try to. It will be at the very least a pleasant change.

Isn’t iNews Cayman the best? Yes, of course. But no other media website will record that let alone believe it!

And if our headline had read “Cayman Islands Premier announced as the WORST Prime Minister “ that would have caused some very intense emotions.

You get my point!
