Serene retreat in Cayman

Martyn Lawrence Bullard creates a serene retreat in Grand Cayman

The Residences at Seafire marry serenity with tropical inspiration

Martyn Lawrence Bullard is no stranger to luxury. As the go-to decorator for a certain set of A-listers, he’s outfitted homes for the likes of Cher, Ellen Pompeo, and the Kardashians, and restored a Medieval Italian castle. With each, the British-born, Los Angeles–based designer has managed to infuse the spaces with the personality of their respective owner—whether that’s Cher’s passion for Buddhism or Khloé Kardashian’s combination of Moroccan design enthusiast and glam room devotee. So what to do with a property without a distinct owner? For one of Bullard’s latest projects, the luxuryResidences at Seafire on the oasis of Grand Cayman, the designer looked to his surroundings for inspiration to create a retreat that is at once serene and tropical.

“It’s really been about finding the essence of this place,” says Bullard. “To me, it was important not to give it my signature, but the signature of this place.”

The Residences, developed by Cayman-based Dart Real Estate, comprise 62 residences in an oceanfront tower on Grand Cayman’s scenic Seven Mile Beach. Of course, as luxury condominiums they offer all the trappings of the good life, including a rooftop terrace, pool, and ocean views. “This whole experience is about finding your happy place,” Bullard explains. “And so that’s what the design is about.”

A large part of that so-called happy place, to Bullard, is found in the locale’s serenity, a quality that makes it feel like “a sanctuary, a little private heaven.” To further infuse that feeling into the residences, Bullard brought aspects of the island’s traditional crafts, like basket-weaving and rope-making, into the decor. The result is a place anyone would surely be happy to call his or her own sanctuary.
