Following an incident on July 20 that saw four crewmembers aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway injured, a second man has died; the death of Ben Buenaventura comes after 41-year-old Filipino national Diogenes Carpio passed away shortly after the incident.

This is according to the website of the Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina & Winkleman law firm, which says, “Last month, LMAW, P.A. reported on the tragic incident where four NCL crewmembers were grievously injured aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway while the ship was in port at King’s Wharf in Bermuda.

“The incident occurred around noon on Wednesday July 20, 2016, when a lifeboat broke from its tethering and fell into the water. One crewmember died immediately; three others were badly injured.

“Early accounts of the incident are that it occurred during the ship’s weekly mandatory safety drills, when a line snapped and the lifeboat dangled from just one wire. Shortly thereafter, the vessel plummeted down into the water and crushed two of the crewmembers.”

Scene following the accident on July:

“LMAW, P.A. was retained by one of the injured crewmembers, Ben Buenaventura. Ben, a Filipino citizen, was a waiter onboard the Breakaway who had worked for NCL for more than a decade. He was crushed by the lifeboat but survived the initial impact.

“Ben was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital with a terrifying list of critical injuries including fractures to both legs, hip, right arm, punctured lungs and traumatic brain injuries. Both Ben and the doctors fought for Ben’s survival for more than a month; but this past weekend, Ben succumbed to his injuries and died.

“Ben leaves behind a loving wife and 5-year-old son. Ben is now the second crewmember to have died in this tragic, yet preventable incident. The Bermuda Police Service previously identified the other crewmember that died immediately as 41-year-old Filipino national Diogenes Carpio.”

We have asked local officials and the Norwegian Cruise Line for comment and will update if able.
