RBC Wealth Management awarded its accounting scholarship to Donnalissa Thorpe, a student at the International College of the Cayman Islands this month. The full scholarship offers a pathway to a career and professional qualification as an accountant.

With one of the highest GPA of students in the school, Ms. Thorpe impressed the scholarship committee with her thoughtful answers about the financial industry, her communication skills and her drive to excel in the complex world of wealth management, explained Brian Taylor, the Head of Trust Management – Caribbean.

“Our team was so pleased to award the RBC Wealth Management scholarship to Donnalissa Thorpe,” said Mr. Taylor. “She is smart, ambitious and ready to grow as a professional accountant. I know she will make a fantastic contribution to RBC Wealth Management.”

RBC Wealth Management decided to partner with ICCI because of the bank’s strong history of promoting education and career development for Caymanians, added Mr. Taylor.

“By leveraging ICCI’s strong accounting programme in conjunction with the scholarship we wanted to build a pathway to a career. We see this scholarship with ICCI as another opportunity to reach out to talented Caymanians who, because of family or personal obligations, prefer to pursue their education on island. It is a wonderful compliment to our current in-house policy of training existing local employees for similar roles.”

Ms. Thorpe said she was thrilled to find out she had received the RBC Wealth Management scholarship and job placement at such a prestigious private bank. She is scheduled to finish her bachelor’s degree in accounting in another year.

“This scholarship is such a big opportunity,” said Ms. Thorpe. “This is one of the top 10 banks in the world so working at RBC Wealth Management will give me plenty of room to grow.”

The RBC Wealth Management scholarship at ICCI has a step-by-step pathway to career advancement. Once Ms. Thorpe completes her accounting degree, she will continue straight into preparing to take the CPA exam with those expenses also paid for through the scholarship.

International College President, Dr. Tasha Ebanks Garcia congratulated Ms. Thorpe on her scholarship award.

“Donnalissa has always been a student that has stood out for her grades, her hard work and her critical thinking skills,” said Dr. Ebanks Garcia. “She has earned this scholarship and job opportunity and I look forward to seeing her continue to grow in her career.
