QU women’s golf competes at Wagner Invitational on Apr. 2-3

Quinnipiac University women’s golf will compete in the 2017 Wagner Invitational at Quail Valley Golf Course in Littleston, Pennsylvania on Sunday, Apr. 2 and Monday, Apr. 3. The two-day tournament is comprised of 36 holes, with 18 holes played per round.

WHERE THEY RANK

  • Quinnipiac currently sits in its highest ranking – 209th out of 252 NCAA Division I teams – in program history.
  • The Bobcats are also currently the highest-ranked Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) team.

THEIR LAST TIME OUT

  • Quinnipiac women’s golf finished eighth out of 17 teams at the Low Country Intercollegiate hosted by Wofford College at Moss Creek Golf Course on Mar. 19, 2017.
  • Sophomore stand-out Luciana Tobia-Palza (La Paz, Bolivia) finished fifth out of 93 golfers with a 157 (+13).
  • The Bobcats shot a combined 332 on Sunday to go with Saturday’s 320 for a two-day total of 652. High Point won the event, followed by Gardner-Webb, Seton Hall, USC Upstate, Bethune Cookman and Wofford and Dalton State tied for sixth ahead of Quinnipiac. The Bobcats finished in front of Appalachian State, Bucknell, Navy, Presbyterian College, UNC Asheville, SCAD, USCB, Longwood and The Citadel.

LUCIANA TOBIA-PALZA NAMED MAAC GOLFER OF THE WEEK

  • Quinnipiac women’s golf sophomore stand-out Luciana Tobia-Palza (La Paz, Bolivia) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week, as announced by the conference on Mar. 22, 2017.

TOP OF HER GAME

  • Tobia-Palza, the 2016 MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Rookie of the Year, currently leads Quinnipiac with a 79.81 average. To date, she has three top-10 finishes in her last four tournaments.

FRESH OUT OF THE GATE

  • Freshman stand-out Alexandra Sazhin (New Fairfield, Connecticut) sits just behind Tobia-Palza with a 80.44 average.
  • Sazhin finished 13th at the Low Country Invitational out of 76 golfers.
  • Sazhin’s top round was a 75 (+3) for the first round of the season-opening Navy Fall Invitational. Her two-day total of 154 was also a career best and her first of two Top 10 (eighth) finishes this season.

JUST JULIA

  • Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) sits third in the Bobcats’ line-up with a 81.88 average.
  • Kemmling entered the season with an 80.13 average after earning All-MAAC honors as a freshman in 2015-16.

BLUE AND GOLD RIBBINS

  • Senior Emily Ribbins (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) is playing the best golf of her career and is making a strong case to fill a spot in the Bobcats’ MAAC Championship line-up. Ribbins is currently averaging a career-best 82.50,which is almost two strokes better than her career average.
  • Ribbins’ career average vs. par was 11.99. This season, Ribbins has shot below +12 or better in 13 of her 14 rounds played this season.
  • Ribbins best round came in the third round of  the Spring Broo Shootout on March 14 when she carded a 79.

ESTEFANIA MORALES

  • Junior Estefania Morales (Caracas, Venezuela) is just behind Ribbins with a 82.58 average – good for a career best.
  • Morales’ top round of the year came in the second round of the Dartmouth Invitational with a 74 on her way to a season-best 156.
