Premier visits Homes in Community Affairs Ministry

From Office of the Premier

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands – There’s a quaint little cottage that overlooks the sea in East End where some of our older citizens gather on the porch to enjoy the sea breeze.

The East End Sunrise Cottage, which is a residential facility for older people, is where Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin continued his tour of the Ministry of Community Affairs on Friday, 23 August, 2013.

He was given a tour of the facilities by Marlene Bonnick, a community care worker and team leader, and met many residents.

The building is an old teachers’ cottage that has undergone two renovations, with work being done on the roof, floors and installation of central air conditioning.

“It’s more of a homelike feel than an institution,” said Jen Dixon, Director of the Department of Children and Family Services.

Like many of the facilities that fall under the remit of DCFS, more space to take in additional residents would be a big help to the elderly in the district who need assistance.

In Breakers, the Hon. Premier was given a walking tour of the units for men and women at Caribbean Haven, which falls under The Counselling Centre remit.

1 premier tour East End CottagewebThe government-operated drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre opened in 2000. It operates separate men’s and women’s facilities and offers residential and outpatient services as well as a half-way house.

From Breakers the Hon. Premier and his entourage, which included Bodden Town MLAs Health Minister Hon. Osbourne Bodden, Anthony Eden and Alva Suckoo; Stephanie Azan, Acting Chief Officer, Ministry of Community Affairs; Debbie Ann Whittaker, Senior Policy Officer, Ministry of Community Affairs; Kenneth Bryan, Political Assistant to the Premier; and Press Secretary to the Premier Tammie Chisholm, gathered at the Bodden Town Civic Centre for a tour of the DCFS facilities.

Following a tour, there was a brief meeting with staff in the conference room.

“I need to know and feel what is going on to make the kind of decisions that are best for the department,” Mr.  McLaughlin said. “Resources are more limited now than they have been in the past. I need a first-hand impression to hopefully have a decent centile of the Wisdom of Solomon as to who gets what out of this small pot.

“The people who do this kind of work are very special people. You are determined to soldier on in these very difficult and austere times,” he said. “There are beams of hope as far as the economy is concerned. This time next year the pressure shouldn’t be as bad.”

4 Premier Tour EE CottagewebMs Dixon said more needs to be done for the country’s youth, women in low paying jobs who have dependent children, housing and indigent medical care.

“The country has people who are in dire, dire circumstances and it’s not going to change,” she said.

A bright spot in the tour was a visit to the Frances Bodden Girls Home, which operates a Care and Protection Programme offering 24-hour residential care for youths who are Court-ordered as being in need of care and protection in a safe and nurturing environment.

The Hon. Premier was treated to a tour of the facilities and a short video presentation of the activities in which the children at the home participated in this summer.
