New Kitchen Garden at Schooner’s Bar & Grill at Cayman Islands Turtle Farm

Screen Shot 2015-05-26 at 8.07.33 AMThe Food & Beverage Team at Schooner’s Bar & Grill, under the guidance of F&B Manager Anita Parsons, has initiated a new Kitchen Garden Project.

Along the lines of the global “farm to table” culinary movement, the team has started a small potted garden to expand the restaurant’s usage of local produce.

Currently, the garden includes scallion (green onion), parsley, and baby tomatoes.

The Schooner’s Kitchen Garden is located on the patio next to the restaurant kitchen and the plants are growing in containers. The Schooner’s team incorporates used coffee grounds from the Schooner’s Screen Shot 2015-05-26 at 7.58.06 AMsignature blend coffee as compost for the garden.

“The goal is to be able to use the garden’s bounty for our future monthly menus to enhance our local offerings,” said Ms. Parsons.

World Turtle Day

Screen Shot 2015-05-26 at 8.04.58 AMLast Saturday (23) the Cayman Turtle Farm celebrated World Turtle Day 2015 with a slate of special observances and activities:

A new mural created by the students of Grace Christian Academy and with the theme of preserving turtle nesting habitats was unveiled and displayed.

An educational video, which is shown for Cayman Turtle Farm guests daily, was on view at the Education Centre mini-theatre throughout the day.

There were several presentations on turtles as well as a World Turtle Day Chalkfest on the red walkway outside the Cayman Turtle Farm Education Centre.

The purpose of World Turtle Day, which is observed every year on May 23 and sponsored since 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.

“Every day at Cayman Turtle Farm: Island Wildlife Encounter is really a World Turtle Day,” said Chief Marketing Officer Tina Trumbach. “But on this day we’re celebrating with some special activities that we hope our guests will join in and support, including a limited edition T-shirt sale and educational presentations on ‘Sea Turtles in Cayman’ by local experts throughout the day.”

They did.
