New floral arranging competition at Cayman Islands’ Ag Show!

Eighteen ladies and one gentleman, from diverse backgrounds, are set to take part in an exciting addition to the 2017 Agriculture Show – a floral arranging competition.

In preparation for this first-such event, entrants completed three evening floral arranging classes. They are currently deciding on the colours, shapes and contexts of the unique home-made pieces they will present at the Agriculture Show (1 March 2017) and the pre-show after hours event on Tuesday evening.

Organised and sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, this unique public-private partnership was made possible through the support of The Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman’s Floral Supervisor.  Ms. Debra Ketter conducted the floral arranging course which took place at the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) campus.

Now armed with vases and containers, as well as native and imported blooms, along with the competition criteria, participants have until Tuesday evening (28 February) to craft their entries – fresh for the show on Wednesday.

Arrangements must include at least three local elements and competitors have to describe where the arrangement would be placed as part of the judging criteria.

Local floral professionals will judge the competition the evening before the Agriculture Show. On Wednesday event goers will be able to view and enjoy the arrangements in the Department of Agriculture’s display tent.
