New Cayman Islands Customs Collector Clifford takes charge

Collector Charles Clifford 2Well known former government minister and local attorney-at-law, Mr. Charles Clifford said he is very happy to be the Cayman Islands’ new Collector of Customs.

Mr. Clifford, who views “every new challenge as an opportunity”, said on his second day on the job today (Tuesday, 18 August 2015) that his main tasks will be revenue maximization for the Government and ensuring that Customs remains a robust partner with the other law enforcement agencies of Immigration and Police.

In addition, he will concentrate on succession planning and staff welfare. This will include a salary review for junior officers to ensure these officers, who are an integral part of the “excellent staff” in place at the Customs Department, get salary parity with their counterparts in Immigration and Police departments, Mr. Clifford said.

He is looking forward to bringing to his challenging new assignment his considerable experience in public life. This Collector Charles Cliffordincludes 23 years in the civil service (with 17 of them with the RCIPS), his administrative acumen gained including as Permanent Secretary which was followed by four years as Minister of Tourism, Environment, Investment and Commerce.

He also brings to the job his significant legal expertise, the qualifications for which he successfully completed from the Truman Bodden Law School/University of Liverpool, while in office and subsequent call to the bar.
