MIAMI, FL – May 17, 2017 – Plastic and reconstructive surgeon Miguel A. Medina III, M.D., has joined the team of cancer specialists at Miami Cancer Institute, a part of Baptist Health South Florida. Dr. Medina will serve as the Institute’s director of microsurgery. He specializes in the treatment of patients requiring skilled plastic and reconstructive surgery after cancer treatments. He has special expertise in complex reconstruction and microsurgery, utilizing cutting-edge operating microscopes and precision instrumentation to perform intricate procedures such as the reconnection of nerves, muscles and blood vessels.

Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Medina’s clinical focus includes abdominal wall reconstruction, breast reconstructive surgery including DIEP flap reconstruction, craniofacial reconstruction and head and neck reconstructive surgery. He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He completed a surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, receiving the V.H. Kazanjian Research Fellowship in reconstructive surgery. He also completed a plastic surgery residency in the Harvard Plastic Surgery Program at Harvard Medical School, where he served as chief resident. He continued his postdoctoral training with a fellowship in craniofacial surgery and microsurgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital/R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Prior to joining Miami Cancer Institute at the Baptist Hospital campus, Dr. Medina specialized in craniofacial and reconstructive microsurgery at Cleveland Clinic in Weston. He is an innovator in his field, with numerous invited national and international presentations, instructional courses and lectures. He also is an experienced clinical educator, serving as clinical assistant professor of surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Dr. Medina has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and serves as a reviewer for three scientific journals, including the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery.
