Local Rotary Club helps Cayman Islands Meals on Wheels

IMG_1673From Larry Chomyn

Thursday (18) at the Westin Hotel saw President Brian Hurley and Past President Larry Chomyn of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman hand over a cheque [of CI$30,00] to Rob Imperato and Beula McField who represented Meals on Wheels.

Brian referred to the foundation of the charity in the Cayman Islands. In 1997 Past President Larry, President of the club at that time had witnessed the Meals on Wheels programme in Saskatoon Canada which had benefitted his parents amongst many others and which was organized by the Rotary Club in the city.

Armed with a similar idea for Cayman, Larry met with Past President of the club Sophia Harris and they in return met with Government officials who were delighted with the idea. Initially the programme was introduced to George Town before the addition of the outlying districts. At that time, food was largely supplied by the Baptist Church. Since that time with the full support of the club it grew beyond belief, with almost all Rotarians acting as delivery men.

Following in 2013 the club realizing the programme was fully established, transferred the programme to a new company, which was in line with Rotary policy, in order that the charity could be run as an independent vehicle.

Throughout the 18 years Rotarians not only donated substantial monies to the charity but delivered to the needy which they do to this very day.
