Lady Gaga cancels US tour to undergo

Two days after postponing part of her US tour, Lady Gaga has called off all remaining concert dates to undergo surgery. The singer will be treated for a labral tear in the hip, requiring “strict down time to recover”.

Gaga herself has yet to follow up her message from Tuesday, in which she revealed that an inflammation of the joints had left her unable to walk. News of the full tour’s cancellation fell to Live Nation Global Touring, who issued a statement on the Little Monsters fan website.

“After additional tests this morning to review the severity of the issue, it has been determined that Lady Gaga has a labral tear of the right hip,” they wrote. “She will need surgery to repair the problem … This unfortunately, will force her to cancel the tour, so she can heal.”

Organisers have now cancelled 21 American concert dates. Instead of just delaying the shows, as was originally hoped, these are cancellations; full refunds are being issued. One month’s missed touring translates into a lot of lost money: the 2012 leg of Gaga’s Born This Way Ball was the fifth highest-grossing tour of that year, earning more than $160m (£103m).

A labral tear consists of a tear of the labrum – cartilage that rings the outside socket of each joint. Sufferers may experience pain and reduced mobility, but it is rarely as severe as the symptoms Gaga described this week. Some have suggested that the singer is suffering from issues related to lupus: in 2010, Gaga said that she had “tested borderline positive” for the disease. “[I] have to take good care of myself,” she told Larry King. “Lupus is in my family and it’s genetic.”

Gaga’s third album, Artpop, is expected later this year.
