Jamaicans and other foreign workers in Cayman are sending more money to their home countries than they have in the last 10 years. 

According to Cayman Islands Monetary Authority data, workers sent almost $235 million home last year, compared to $217.7 million in 2017.  

The previous high for remittances was almost $229 million in 2008. 

Most of the money, about $133 million, was sent to Jamaica. 

 Filipinos sent home almost $40 million, Hondurans $17 million, and Americans $12 million. 

Robert Hamaty, former board member of Jamaica National Money Services in Cayman, said the record outflow of remittances last year is likely due to a growing expatriate population, particularly the increasing number of Jamaicans working in the booming construction industry.
