Island Heritage gets the Blues

Blue Iguana Warden John Marotta

On Saturday, 13 October Island Heritage staff, their family and friends were treated to a Blue Iguana Safari at the Botanic Park. As a participant in Island Heritage’s First Annual Charity Drive, The Blue Iguana Recovery Programme received a $10,000 donation from Island Heritage and offered the safari to show Island Heritage just where their money went. The safari, led by John Marotta one of the programme’s wardens, included a tour of the Blue Iguana’s captive breeding facility.

Island Heritage’s Monique Bush reflected on the day, “Getting an up close look at the beautiful creatures and learning more about them was something very special and our group enjoyed it immensely. Having now seen the facilities, it is even more pleasing to know that, through CharityDrive, Island Heritage was able to contribute to the programme’s continued success.

Fred Burton, Director of the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme, was grateful for the Company’s donation, “Corporate Sponsors here in the Cayman Islands are one of the key sources of core funding for our work with the Blues, and we could not possibly have achieved all that we have, without that sort of support from local businesses. All those who have supported our work should share some credit for the fact that you can now see Blue Iguanas living wild just by going to the QE II Botanic Park. It’s worth reflecting that this world famous symbol of Cayman’s natural heritage was on the verge of extinction, only a decade ago!”
