No vote for long-term overseas residents

By Simon Jones From The Royal Gazette

The Bermuda Government has no plans to extend voting rights to Bermudians living permanently abroad.

At the end of last year, absentee ballots allowing students to vote were proposed for the new legislative year by the One Bermuda Alliance.

However, Michael Fahy, the Minister of Home Affairs, told The Royal Gazette that the Government has no immediate plans to widen it out to include those living overseas long-term.

“Because they have moved their place of residence, the constitution is clear, as is the Parliamentary Election Act, that those ordinarily living outside Bermuda cannot vote in Bermuda elections,” Mr Fahy said.

“We believe it’s fair that only students who are officially resident in Bermuda should get that right to vote.

“Giving people living outside Bermuda that right could cause problems especially if they are registered at their parents’ house or have property of their own. We don’t want to get into those kind of difficulties.”

Mexico rescues 9 Cubans adrift off Caribbean coast

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS From ABC News

The Mexican Navy says it has rescued nine Cuban migrants found adrift in a makeshift boat off Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

The Navy said Thursday the private, Panama-flagged tanker ship Chem Venus spotted the Cubans on Tuesday.

The Navy dispatched a ship to pick up the seven men and two women at a spot about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Isla Mujeres.

It said they had been turned over to immigration authorities.

Mexico often gives Cubans temporary paperwork allowing them to reach the U.S. border, where special immigration policies allow them to stay.

Cubans long used the sea route, but in recent months many had preferred an overland route through Ecuador and Central America. Thousands are now stranded there after Ecuador established visa requirements, and Nicaragua refused them passage.

Trinidad labelled as a ‘violent society’ by acting Commissioner

WILLIAMS-1-By Jamaica Observer From St Lucia News Online

WILLIAMS–1-JAMAICA OBSERVER – Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams has lamented on the crime rate in the twin island republic, stating that the society is a violent one.

“Trinidad and Tobago has become a very violent society. We express violence for the simplest things. Imagine a man arguing with someone he knows over a gyro and it ends in murder,” said Williams in an interview with the Sunday Newsday newspaper.

Since the start of the year , 17 people have been murdered .

“Counting the murders is painful – we should feel pain when anyone dies.”

The Acting Police Commissioner revealed that despite the record high number of gun seizures – 685 guns for 2015 – the murders continued unabated and proposed what he calls “collective efficacy” where the entire society must come together to deal with crime.
