Road Closures for Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, Sunday 3 December

The Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon will be taking place this Sunday, 3 December, from 5:00AM to 11:00AM. There will be several road closures along its route. We ask that motorists and pedestrians familiarize themselves with the route (in the attached map) and closures (detailed below), and be mindful of the safety of participants and spectators. Police will be on hand to direct local traffic along the route (residents only).

The following closures will take place on Saturday night:

–          Cardinal Avenue will be closed from 8:00PM

–          The junction of Harbour Drive and Fort Street will be closed from 12:00AM (Sunday)

The following closures will occur from 2:00AM-12:00PM Sunday:

–          The Westbound left lane will be closed from South Sound Road along Shamrock Road to the first roundabout on the East-West Arterial (at Prospect Point Road). Westbound traffic will be reduced to a single right lane.

–          The junction at the end of South Sound Road and Shamrock Road will be closed. The road will be open into Grand Harbour and to Crewe Road.

The following junctions will be closed from 4:30AM-12:00PM Sunday:

–          The junction of Edward and Fort Street (George Town Clock)

–          The junction of Fort Street and Harbour Drive

–          The junction of Edward Street and Cardinal Avenue

–          The junction of Main Street and Shedden Road

–          The junction of South Church Street and Goring Avenue

–          The junction of Shedden Road and Elgin Avenue

–          The junction of Elgin Avenue and Hospital Road (Government Administration Building Roundabout)

–          The junction of South Sound Road and Walkers Road

–          The junction of South Church Street and Goring Avenue

–          Walkers Road at Hinds Way and at Academy Way

–          The junction of Aspiration Drive and Hinds Way

–          The Junction of Old Crewe Road and South Sound

–          Prospect Point Road will also be closed

Cayman Islands Winter Carnival Traffic Advisory, 1 December to 7 January

The Cayman Islands Winter Carnival begins Friday, 1 December and continues daily through Sunday, 7 January, and is located just north of Cost-U-Less, off the Esterley Tibbets Highway. Parking for the event will be available on either side of Pinehurst Road (off Esterley Tibbets), at Governors Public Beach, and on West Bay Road from just north of Governors Square (The Pinnacle) up to The Avalon. Shuttle buses will provide transportation to the venue from Governors Beach and from the lots off Pinehurst Road.

The RCIPS is advising motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution in these areas during the event times, between 6PM and 12AM. In addition, we are reminding the public that no parking will be permitted along the Esterley Tibbets Highway.

Cayman Islands Port Authority Timely Cargo Collection Urged Over the Holidays

Cayman Islands Liquor Licensing Board Quarterly Meeting Fri 1 Dec

The Liquor Licensing December 2017 Quarterly Session is being held  Friday 1 December 2017, at 2pm in Board Room 2112 of the Government Administration Building.

Liquor Licence grant applicants shall attend before the Board at the time of the opening of the sessions and such other times as the Board may require and may, in addition, be represented by a person qualified to practise law in the Islands.

Applicants will have an opportunity to address the Board, at which time they may provide any information that they deem relevant to the application; and the Board may also have queries.

Persons who have submitted objections to any item published on the agenda are also required to attend the meeting.

Final Extension for all Cayman Islands Contractors to Register

The Builders Board has again extended, for the final time, the deadline for all local contractors to register with the board. The contractors’ deadline has been moved a full four-months from Thu (30 November 2017) to 31 March 2018.

All contractors will have to register to be able to seek permits or request inspections from the Planning Department after 31 March next year.

This registration requirement is for general and civil contractors, residential and building contractors as well as trade contractors.

Watch thieves clone a Mercedes key from outside the owner’s house, stealing his car in seconds

As long as automobiles have been around, there’s been car theft. Auto manufacturers and car thieves have escalated an increasingly technological battle for decades, but thieves in the UK have been caught on camera pulling off the perfect con.

Security cameras in Solihull, England, show a pair of car thieves using a “relay” device to impersonate the proximity signal from a Mercedes key inside the owner’s house. The result is that the thieves can open a car, start it, and drive away — all while the keys sit inside the sleeping owner’s house.

A “relay box” attack takes advantage of a weakness in proximity keys, which are popular in modern expensive cars. Proximity systems don’t require a key to be physically inserted in an ignition to unlock or start the car; instead, the car detects the presence of a key nearby, and unlocks the vehicle.

In a relay attack, one thief walks around a house holding one box, which tries to pick up the passive signal that the key emits. It’s strong enough to travel through windows or a door — say, if you leave your keys on a hook near the front door. The relay box then transmits that signal to a second relay box, which is held near the car. The process takes just seconds, and means that a car can be stolen silently, without any break-in or alarms.

The system won’t defeat many less sophisticated aftermarket security systems, like a wheel lock or immobilizer. Another solution for owners worried about theft would be to keep your keys in an RFID-blocking bag when they’re in the house.

Cayman Islands charities have another chance to learn about the NPO Law

Organisations that solicit funds from the public for charitable causes have another chance to learn about The Non-Profit Organisation Law.

The Ministry of Financial Services is hosting a one-hour information session on Thursday, 30 November, from 6pm to 8pm in room 1038 of the Government Administration Building.

This discussion will inform charities – such as churches, sports clubs and humanitarian groups – of their responsibilities under the law, and highlight the benefits of registering to be a non-profit organisation.

Cayman Islands DVDL Crewe Road Open Extra Hours in December

The Department of Vehicles and Drivers Licensing (DVDL) Crewe Road office will open longer for two days every week during December 2017.

On Wednesdays and Fridays, the office will open as normal at 8:30 am but close later at 7pm.

All other days – Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays – the office will operate as usual from 8.30am to 4pm.

Prince Harry: Stars were aligned when I met Meghan

The fifth in line to the throne was speaking after the couple announced their engagement and plans to marry in spring 2018.

The couple told the BBC’s Mishal Husain they met on a blind date and neither had known much about each other.

Prince Harry said “beautiful” Ms Markle “just tripped and fell into my life”.

He believed Ms Markle and his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, would have been “thick as thieves… best friends”.

Cayman Islands DEH Temporarily reduces intake of scrap metals and derelict vehicles

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) wishes to advise the public that the George Town landfill is temporarily operating at a reduced frequency for the acceptance of scrap metals and derelict vehicles.

The DEH urges residents to refrain from abandoning vehicles on private property, along the road way and in other public spaces during this time. The DEH is also asking members of the public not to bring in scrap metals until further notice.

“We have not completely stopped the collection of scrap metals and derelict vehicles but have reduced the quantities going to the landfill until we can safely stack the metals and prepare another area for the safe storage of the derelict vehicles,” said DEH Director Roydell Carter.

The DEH apologises to the public for any inconvenience caused by this temporary delay and will update members of the public as soon as it is able to resume complete collection of derelict vehicles/scrap metals.

Cayman Islands’ Green Iguana Cull extended

The Department of Environment wishes to announce that this year’s green iguana cull is to be extended until the end of November 2017.

Although contracts to cullers were issued with a provisional end date of 31 August 2017, availability of funds is sufficient to allow current culling contractors to continue until the end of November. Terms of contracts and payment rates will remain unchanged.

Culling contractors and other interested parties are asked to carefully note the following deadlines and arrangements:

1. No new contractors will be signed up after 5 p.m. on 31 August, 2017.

2. The green iguana raffle will close on 31 August 2017. Participants will be invited to attend the closing draw.

3. No contractor reports of culled iguanas will be accepted for payment after 5 p.m. on 30 November, 2017.
