How you can help the Adelinas of the world

From Freedom United

At just 21 years old, Adelina Sau died at the hands of her employer. She was a migrant domestic worker in Malaysia whose death, and the injustice surrounding it, shocked the world.[1] We will not allow her death to be in vain and we want you to have a part in that – invest today to protect domestic workers from slavery and abuse

Adelina travelled from Indonesia to Malaysia, where she found a job as a domestic worker. But her hopes of a safe work environment and earnings to support herself and her family were brutally dashed. After working for two years with no pay, Adelina was found outside her employers’ home where she had been forced to sleep for over a month. Her body was covered in horrific burns indicating that she had suffered physical torture.

In February 2018, Adelina died in the hospital. Her employer was charged with murder but has just recently been acquitted.

I have been missing my child for a year. She died not because of her sickness, but because she was tortured” said Yohana Banunaek, Adelina Sau’s mother.[2]

As a community, we too are outraged but we can turn that outrage into action.Donate today so that we can continue pushing governments to protect migrant domestic workers from slavery and exploitation.

Adelina’s story doesn’t have to be repeated. Any amount will support our work to elevate your voice and make sure those in power hear us – can you help the work continue?

We are calling on governments to ratify ILO Convention 189, or the Domestic Workers Convention, to ensure workers like Adelina are fully protected by formal labor laws.  Only 28 countries have signed the convention so far. Neither Malaysia nor Indonesia are one of these.

With your help, we can get more countries to ratify C189 and see an end to domestic worker exploitation.
