CONCACAF.com GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (March 4, 2014) – Tapping the knowledge gained from its participation in the 2011 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Champions’ Cup, Bodden Town Football Club aims to advance past the first round of the tournament’s 2014 version (now known as the CFU Club Championship).

The reigning Cayman Islands champion will be in Puerto Rico from March 21-25 for first-round, Group 1 play against Bayamon (Puerto Rico), Centro Dominguito (Curacao) and Unite Sainte-Rose (Guadeloupe).

“We feel if we execute our game plan, we will be victorious,” Bodden Town manager Kennedy Kelly told CONCACAF.com. “We are going to give it our best shot.”

Three years ago, Bodden Town hosted then Puerto Rico champion River Plate in a preliminary round series. After losing the opening fixture (2-0), it won the second leg (1-0), but was eliminated 2-1 on aggregate.

The club has used that experience to motivate the players ahead of their return to the CFU’s qualifying competition for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Striker Theron Wood, one of Bodden Town’s marquee players, hopes to lead his team beyond the initial hurdle.

“We are very excited to go into the tournament,” said Wood, who was unavailable for the 2011 competition.

“We are training hard for it and our first goal is to get through the first round and move from there.”

More than just squaring off against the best clubs in the region, Kelly hopes this opportunity provides his players with an example of what it takes to compete at the top level.

“Our youth players need exposure at the highest level,” he commented. “We have players who want to play professionally and some who are trying to gain scholarships, this competition will help them with their dreams and aspirations.”
