Cayman Under 19 Girls’ rugby game against Jamaica was a tense affair.  Jamaica seemed to dominate the first half of the game collecting points continuously, leaving Cayman in the dirt.

Kadjan Gayle gained the first three points for Jamaica on a penalty kick early in the game. Followed by Wendy Parchment getting a try and Gayle with the conversion placing the score at 10-0.  The Cayman girls’ team, lacking on the scoreboard, were still fighting back with good tackles and strong defense. Despite their efforts, Gayle scored Jamaica’s second and last try of the night setting the score at 15-0 at half time.

Jamaica’s men’s team was out supporting their girls and during the game made quite the statement with loud cheers, songs and dances that captivated spectators’ attention and pumped up the girls’ team. By the second half it seemed Cayman supporters were following suit and started a cheering war with the Jamaican boys’ team. Sounds echoed through the stadium as fans stomped, clapped, sang and danced.

The second half began as though Cayman might not be able to catch up.

However, Cayman came back strong. Jo Zeigler, the Cayman scrum half, scored their first try with Katie Bayles getting the conversion, setting the score at 15-7. In the final minutes of the last half, Cayman fought hard and Loletta Hanna scored a second try.

Cayman pushed ahead in the last minutes of the game fighting to even the score but, in the end, Jamaica was victorious with 15-12 as the final score.
