Cayman Islands University issues statement re-sexual harassment

A Statement from the Office of the President and the Senior Management Team

The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) is committed to the stewardship of Cayman’s youth and remains steadfast in exercising a zero tolerance policy toward sexual harassment and any other sexual impropriety.

The University College is cognizant of the impact that the Pavlov Rameau case has had on the UCCI Community, especially our students. Whilst it may have rendered the institution vulnerable, it has also strengthened our resolve to create a safer, more vigilant, more supportive and more caring environment for students and staff.

From the outset, the administration took decisive actions to mitigate the damage and safeguard students who are the highest priority at UCCI.

The University College:

Launched its own investigation and imposed sanctions according to the employee handbook;
Provided its full cooperation to authorities investigating the matter;
Mandated all employees, including the President and Senior Management, to undergo Darkness to Light training;
Provided information, support and counselling services;
Is currently in the final stages of developing new policies on Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting and Sexual Harassment; and
Will implement a robust plan to combat sexual harassment and abuse on campus in the upcoming academic year.

Coming on the heels of the #metoo social movement, this case only underscores the importance of UCCI’s role in taking charge of cultivating a culture that supports those who speak out. We are making an appeal to all alumni, former and current students of UCCI to make themselves heard.
