Cayman Islands Public Library Service appoints new librarian

From Cayman Islands Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands

Kevin Goring was recently appointed as a Librarian for the Cayman Islands Public Library Service (CIPLS). In addition to providing general library services, Mr. Goring will assist with outreach, planning, promotion, coordination and implementation of programming offered through or by CIPLS to support the recreational, educational and information access needs of its patrons.

“Mr. Goring brings with him a great deal of education and experience to his new post and the staff feels very fortunate that he is a member of the CIPLS. He has worked as Library Assistant since 2016 and has built a good rapport with his team and the community,” Director of CIPLS Ramona Melody.

Amongst other professional accomplishments, Mr. Goring holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Computer Art from the Savannah College Art and Design (SCAD), an Executive Certificate in International Marketing from Loyola University Chicago and various certificates in a variety of disciplines including Business Communication, Sales, Customer Service, Supervisory Management, Team Leadership and Hospitality.

Shortly after joining the civil service in 2002, he spent nearly a decade as a key member of the Marketing Unit at the Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) and a stint as an Information Officer at Government Information Services (GIS). While at GIS, Mr. Goring sat on the Miss Cayman Islands and Child Month committees and served as Media Coordinator during the 2003 Royal Visit of His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex during the Quincentennial Celebrations. In 2007, Mr. Goring was elected to the Cayman Islands Civil Service Association (CICSA) Management Council where he served two years as Director and also, Head of the Events Sub-Committee.

On National Heroes Day 2014, Mr. Goring received an ‘Emerging Cultural Heritage Pioneer Award’ due to the success of his two self-published books: “The Cayman Islands Dictionary” and “Caymanian Expressions”. He was honoured once again on National Heroes Day 2018, when he received a ‘Long Service Award’ for sports due to his 12 years’ experience as a martial arts instructor, national team member and competitor.

Mr. Goring is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Information and Library Studies via Robert Gordon University Aberdeen in the United Kingdom, and he recently completed a certificate in Alternative Basic Library Education (ABLE) via the Idaho Commission for Libraries. In an effort to keep abreast of industry trends, Mr. Goring became a member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), the leading professional body for librarians, information specialists and knowledge managers in the United Kingdom, as well as the Cayman Islands Information Professionals (CIIP) organisation.

When asked about his new role at the CIPL, Mr. Goring said, “I believe that families are the core of any community, and as librarians, it is our responsibility to provide them with the information and tools at our disposal in order to ensure their success in education, employment and life in general.”

Chief Officer Christen Suckoo for the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture, and Lands stated, “I wish to extend congratulations to Mr. Goring on his well-deserved appointment. It is heartening to see Caymanian civil servants continuing to pursue further education and connect with relevant organisations that will assist them not only personally in their careers, but professionally it will enhance how we serve the people of the Cayman Islands. I trust he will be successful in his new role at the Public Library Service and continue to make the lives of those we serve better.”
