Cayman Islands police warn of uptick in injury accidents this past weekend, 28-30 July

From RCIPS

Last weekend saw a total of 26 motor vehicle accidents reported to police, six of which are highlighted below.  The suspected causes of these accidents are speed, alcohol, inattentiveness and impatience behind the wheel, and police are asking that anyone with any information about any of these incidents to please call the Traffic Management Unit at 649-6254.

At 8PM Friday evening, 28 July, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre dispatched police to a report of a minor accident in which a grey Kia Optima had been struck by a white truck on Town Hall Drive in the vicinity of Alfresco’s Restaurant in West Bay. The white truck had been coming from Powell Smith Drive and had caused minor damage to the bumper and left tire.   The driver of the white truck refused to stop, and was followed all the way to South Sound Cemetery by the driver of the Kia, who lost sight of the vehicle at that point.

Police are seeking the white truck, which can be further described as having a dark-coloured hood.  Anyone who has any information regarding this vehicle is asked to call the TMU.

Just before 9PM the same evening, police and emergency personnel responded to a report of a collision on Crewe Road east of Lindhurst Avenue between a white Toyota Starlet and white Isuzu truck, after which the truck had flipped over.  Both occupants of the truck, a man and woman, were taken to Cayman Islands Hospital with minor injuries and later discharged; the driver of the car was not harmed in the incident.

A large crowd had gathered at the scene and the road was closed by police in order to conduct investigations; it was reopened shortly after 10PM.

Just past 5AM Saturday morning, 29 July, police responded to a single-vehicle accident on Homestead Crescent in Bodden Town in which a white Honda Civic had run off the road into the bushes.  The single male driver of the vehicle was found outside the car, bleeding from injuries and but conscious.  He was taken to Cayman Islands Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.

Early Sunday morning, 30 July, Cayman Islands’ Hospital staff called officers to the hospital regarding two injured men who had arrived at the A&E.  Officers learned that the two men, both in their early twenties, had been involved in an accident sometime before 2AM that morning on Sparky’s Drive in the vicinity of Lancaster Crescent while in a red Honda Accord.  A white car was also in the vicinity when the accident occurred, and a high rate of speed is believed to be a contributing factor to the accident.

Officers returned to the scene and recovered the red Honda; the incident is under police investigation.  Anyone with any information is asked to call PC Holder at the TMU.

Officers also attended two accidents yesterday, 30 July, which occurred while overtaking.  Just before 16:30PM on Northside Road in the vicinity of Further Road, a Kia was behind a Ford travelling from Rum Point.  While overtaking the driver lost control of the Kia, which collided into a coconut tree on the side of the road. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Just before 9PM yesterday evening, 30 July, officers also responded to a collision in Bodden Town on Shamrock Road in the vicinity of Trumbach Road.  A Suzuki Vitara attempting to overtake a truck that had stopped in front of it collided with an oncoming Honda.  Both the driver and passenger in the Honda were taken to Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment.  The driver of the Suzuki, a 39-year-old man of George Town, was arrested for driving with an expired license and other traffic-related offences.

“Despite the fact that fewer people are on island at this time of year, we are still seeing a number of serious accidents,” said Sgt. Lenford Butler of the Traffic Management Unit, “while none of these have resulted in life-threatening injuries, there is still an alarming trend of drivers continuing to allow either alcohol or impatience to impair their judgment behind the wheel.  All of us have a duty to keep our roads safe, including passengers, who can often influence what is happening in a vehicle, and also regularly suffer serious injuries when accidents occur.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Traffic Management Unit at 649-6254.  Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS via ourConfidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online at the link: https://www.tipsubmit.com/WebTips.aspx?AgencyID=681 .
