Cayman Islands patrol officers disrupt burglary-in-progress, one arrested

From RCIPS

While on proactive patrol in the West Bay area early this morning just before 4:30AM, officers responded quickly to a report of a nearby alarm at Tortuga Rum Company on Northwest Point Road.  When they arrived two men were seen exiting the rear of premises toward a pickup truck with its engine running.  They were ordered to stop, did not comply, and began running in opposite directions. One of the men, age 22 of West Bay, was quickly detained and arrested.

The second man ran up NW Point Road toward the Cracked Conch, pursued by the second officer.  He escaped near the Cayman Automotive Museum.

The 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle, and is currently in Police custody.

Officers quickly determined that the pickup truck with its engine running in the parking lot had been reported stolen.

This incident concluded a weekend (Friday through Sunday nights) during which nine burglaries were reported across the island, five of which were at commercial premises.

“We recognize that burglaries continue to be a significant problem across the islands,” said Robbie Graham, Superintendent of Uniform Operations, “therefore we have undertaken more proactive police work in addition to our regular policing plans, with the aim of disrupting burglars and other criminal activity, as in this instance.”
