Cayman Islands Lions recycle for sight

Lion Nereen and Leos at BKGRAND CAYMAN, 22 APRIL 2015: On Saturday, 18 April, the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens partnered with the Burger King and Popeye’s enterprises to kick off its Recycle for Sight campaign. Lions and Leos were out in their numbers promoting the campaign and collecting glasses. Since then, the Club has collected over 100 glasses and would love to increase this number to 1000. So, as your spring cleaning gets underway, we are asking everyone to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eye glasses and donate them to the Lions Recycle for Leo Rochel at BKSight programme. Start a drive at your workplace, church or gym and donate to this worthy cause.

During the month of April and May, the club will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible.

According to Lion Pat Bazell-Taylor, Coordinator for the Recycle for Sight campaign, “We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses. In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.” The donated glasses will be shipped to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they Lion Paulette Conolly with collection boxwill be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups.

To donate used glasses (including sunglasses and reading glasses) place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes located at all Burger King and Popeye locations, Chrissie Tomlinson Hospital, Clifton Hunter School, Tropical Optical, and various other Opticians’ offices.

The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens meets every first and third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at its office at Lions and Leo at PopeyesElizabethan Square.
