Cayman Islands: John Gray High School prefects conclude duties

John Gray HS Prefects PRINTJohn Gray High School’s Year 11 prefects have wrapped up their duties following a year of service.

The 35 students, who served from 2015 to 2016, have been honing their leadership skills with duties and responsibilities in all aspects of school life.

This included assisting at reporting sessions, canteen and compound duty, tutoring in maths and English, and mentoring Year 7 students.

Additionally, they were responsible for carrying out at least three service projects prior to the end of their tenure.

They raised $1055 for the Cancer Society by selling cookies and cakes at Foster’s supermarket and Camana Bay; and $402 for a Nadine Andreas children’s home Christmas treat by singing carols on the sidewalk around George Town.

On 15 April, with the support of other members of the school community, the prefects staged a teacher appreciation event at the John Gray school hall.

The evening consisted of food, music, dancing, modelling, prizes, gifts and certificates for the teachers in a fine-dining setting created by the students in the school cafeteria.

To mark the end their tenure at John Gray High School, the young people were last month rewarded with a day trip to Rum Point for lunch, which included touring Pedro St. James and the Mission House in Bodden Town. The group also stopped at the shoe tree in South Sound for a photograph on the way back to school.

“The prefects this year have been outstanding – they personify all that is great about John Gray,” said John Gray High School Principal Jon Clark. “They have played their part in improving the school whilst developing and growing as individuals who are committed to excellence in themselves and also in others.

“I would like to give particular thanks to our head boy Josue Sanchez-Ebanks and our head girl Chauntol Hylton, who have shown exceptional leadership of the group and are not only an asset to us here at school but, I am sure, will go on to do great things for the Cayman Islands.”
