• The event raised a total of $89,000.
• Funds to support five causes which aim to feed children and the elderly.
• The total exceeded the goal by close to $30,000.

GRAND CAYMAN (GIS) – The 2018 DG’s 5K Challenge raised a total of $89,000 for the five charitable causes, which focus on feeding the most vulnerable in our community.

The grand total is $29,000 more than the goal Mr. Manderson set for the event held in April. With a focus on food and well-being, the beneficiaries on Grand Cayman will be Cayman Islands Meals on Wheels, Feed Our Future, and the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman’s Buy a Kid Breakfast programme, each receiving $28,000.

A total of $3,000 was raised from the Cayman Brac event and will be donated to the Kirkconnell Community Care Centre for meals, while the $2,000 raised in Little Cayman will go towards a “grow box” at that island’s school.

“I am delighted we raised such a huge sum of money for such a tremendous cause,” he said. “Many of us take it for granted that we have three meals a day, while some people are not sure they will have even one. I am very happy that we are able to support these great causes, which make such a difference in the lives of many people, with a donation that has exceeded all our expectations.”

Mr. Manderson revealed the impressive fund-raising total during a reception at Government House last night (Wednesday, 20 June) held as a mark of gratitude to sponsors, the event organising committee and volunteers.  This year’s event marked the 5^th anniversary and brings the total funds raised from the event and donated to the community to $296,000.  “We couldn’t raise these funds without the generous support of our sponsors and the incredible support from the community – everyone who has been involved in the Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge has been part of making this happen” noted Mr. Manderson.

Over 2,000 walkers and runners took part in this year’s DG’s 5K Challenge, including the events in Cayman Brac, Little Cayman and Grand Cayman.
