Caribbean bookings rebound following hurricane impact

By Phil Davies From Travel Weekly UK

The Caribbean is seeing a resounding rebound from last year’s devastating hurricanes with a surge in bookings from the UK.

The Bahamas has seen the biggest increase at 60% since the start of the year, followed by the Dominican Republic at 53%, Antigua 14% and Barbados recording a 12% rise in bookings via online travel agent Travel Republic.

Family bookings are up by more than 150% to both The Bahamas and Dominican Republic, according to the company.

Increased product choice, new airline routes and a rise in celebrity holiday snaps on social media have helped boost bookings.

All inclusive stays are the most popular board basis for British holidaymakers.

The Dominican Republic has become the second most popular Caribbean destination for Travel Republic customers after Cuba, followed by Jamaica, Barbados and Saint Lucia.

A company spokesman said: “It is great to see such strong growth and enthusiasm amongst our customers for the Caribbean, in particular islands such as Antigua and Barbados which have been steadily expanding their accommodation and attraction product.

“The Caribbean offers a wide choice of grand resorts, plenty of options for day trips and a good guarantee of sun and all for excellent value for money, so it is no surprise to see so many of us travelling west.”

Ten most popular Caribbean destinations by Travel Republic customers:

1. Cuba
2. Dominican Republic
3. Jamaica
4. Barbados
5. Saint Lucia
6. Grenada
7. Antigua and Barbuda
8. The Bahamas
9. Aruba
10. Puerto Rico
