Canadian debut novel set in Cayman Islands

Devi Di Guida hopes for success with her first novel called The Cayman Hustle

Beaconsfield resident Devi Di Guida recently self-published The Cayman Hustle: a novel of romance and suspense. It is presently available onAmazon.com, with proceeds going towards cancer research. You should see it in bookstores by June.

The storyline revolves around a secret and ultimate game of conspiracy, set up by billionaires from around the world. It begins when a stash of gold bars worth millions is buried in a tropical underwater rainforest in the Cayman Islands – the perfect playground for the uber-rich and ground zero for the intrigue that lies ahead. Ensconced in the loot is a coveted Brazilian tourmaline believed to be a rare rainbow-colored chakra stone. Who will get to it first? Tensions begin to bubble under the surface as felonious affairs and scandals take shape on this idyllic island. Enter Kaman Colioni, a 25-year-old deaf man who unwittingly finds the booty, his incredible journey, and the hustle of a lifetime. Who can he trust? The suspense will have you turning pages deep into the night and make you wonder how such a lush haven could become a wild nightmare.

Half of the novel is set in Montreal. Devi was born in Guyana. She is married with three children and studied creative writing and journalism at Concordia University. For the past 15 years, she has worked as a technical writer. The Cayman Hustle is her debut novel. Having experienced contact with a number of people who are hearing impaired in the past, she wanted to introduce a character who is deaf in her book. She says it took her two years to complete the writing portion of the project and another year before going to press. The book is dedicated to Wesley Bauer, whose father killed him along with his mother, two brothers and grandfather in 2001. “Wesley was our neighbour when we lived in Kirkland and a friend of my son’s,” Devi says.

I hope the Beaconsfield Library buys a copy of The Cayman Hustle!
