Camana Bay’s 9th Annual Basketball Camp

Camana Bay’s 9th Annual Basketball Camp offers children the chance to receive instruction and inspiration from NBA Player Cody Zeller

The 9th Annual Basketball Camp at Camana Bay’s Arts & Recreation Centre (ARC), is back from July 24 – 28. Young athletes ages seven to 17 are encouraged to register for this camp to enhance their basketball skills by training with lead basketball coaches from the United States.

This popular event first started in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Basketball Association as well as camp staff and players from the Orlando Magic basketball team. The camp quickly grew and expanded, offering Cayman Islands basketball players the chance to meet with other professional players from multiple teams from the United States. When the event was first presented nine years ago, it was the perfect way to introduce Camana Bay’s new sports complex to the community while at the same time encouraging local youth to participate in sports. Jeffrey Wight, Senior Manager of Guest Services & Recreation is to thank, for initiating the camp and very proud of the results after nine successful years. “Every year I receive very positive feedback from the professional athletes that have participated in the programme. They are very impressed with the sports complex and how Camana Bay offers these camps that encourage youth involvement in sports,” Jeff noted when asked about the players’ experience.

This year, Dart Enterprises sponsored 25 children to attend both the basketball camp and the Camana Bay Multi-Sport Camp through various local networks including the Cayman Islands Basketball Association, the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation, the Special Olympics of the Cayman Islands (SOCI) as well as participants from Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Every year, professional high school and college basketball coaches dedicate their time to train and prepare these young basketball enthusiasts through drills and live games while making it fun yet beneficial to their athletic skills. This year, campers will get the opportunity to attend a meet and greet with professional basketball player, Cody Zeller! At seven feet tall, Cody was destined to play for the NBA. He has been playing for the Charlotte Hornets since he was drafted back in 2013 in the first round as the fourth overall pick. For the Zeller family, basketball is a family affair. Cody’s brothers have also played for the NBA while his uncle was drafted to the league back in 1974 for the Detroit Pistons.

The week-long camp is divided into two sessions. The morning sessions run from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. for children ages seven to 12, and the afternoon sessions for players ages 12-17 run from 12:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.

To register for the camp, contact [email protected] or call 345.640.4000.
