Beyonce’s debut Coachella performance pays tribute to Afro, Caribbean legends

Singer and performer Beyonce lit up the crowd at her debut performance at Coachella, a year after she was announced as a headliner.

She becomes the first black woman to headline the  music festival held in Indio, California

She not only bought her husband Jay Z and fellow Destiny Child members Kelly and Michelle and danced with Solange, but she also paid homage to some of Africa’s and Caribbean legends.

In one of the sets, she featured legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti

She also covered songs by Jamaican musicians- Dawn Penn’s No No No and Sister Nancy’s Bam Bam.

Beyonce, who missed out last year’s performance because she was pregnant with twins, thanked the Coachella Festival for making her the first black woman headliner.

“Coachella, thank you for allowing me to be the first black woman to headline,” Beyonce said, before singing “Run the World Girls).”

Beyonce’s performance, which was streamed live on YouTube, was watched by about half a million people at home.
