Barnes [Cayman Islands], Houston, Jackson honored at annual University Life Awards ceremony

SAN ANTONIO —Lacee Barnes (women’s track & field), Julie Houston(women’s golf) and Jhivvan Jackson (men’s basketball) each were honored at UTSA’s annual University Life Awards ceremony Thursday night.

Barnes received the Outstanding Sophomore Award, while Houston and Jackson were named Female and Male Athletes of the Year.

Barnes won the Outstanding Sophomore Award, which goes to the student who best demonstrates outstanding leadership and service to UTSA and the local community. A native of Grand Cayman, she is a thrower for the women’s track & field team who competed for her the Cayman Islands at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships. This season has been highlighted by a fourth-place effort in the shot put at the FasTrak Invitational in January and a fifth-place finish in the discus at the UTSA Invitational in March. A 2018 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll member, she owns personal bests of 14.20 meters (46-7 ¼) in the shot put, 49.03m (160-10) in the discus, 38.67m (126-10) in the hammer throw and 13.86m (45-5 ¾) in the weight throw. 

Houston has posted a 74.04 stroke average and three top-10 finishes during her senior season. The Allen, Texas, product fired a 5-under-par 208 (71-68-69) to finish second and lead the Roadrunners to the Texas State Invitational team title in February. The reigning C-USA individual champion tied for fourth with a 218 (73-72-73) to help UTSA win the Lady Maxwell Invitational in September. A three-time all-conference performer, including a first-team selection as a junior, shares the school record with three career wins and is a five-time C-USA Golfer of the Week honoree. Houston is a 2018 C-USA All-Academic Team selection, a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar and a three-time C-USA Academic Medal recipient.

Jackson won the C-USA scoring title as a sophomore in 2018-19, averaging 22.9 points per game to become the program’s first league scoring champion in 15 years. Despite missing the first three games of the year and returning on a minutes-restriction for the following five contests, the 2018 C-USA Freshman of the Year was named first-team all-conference and he earned first-team all-district accolades from both the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the United States Basketball Writers Association. Jackson, a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, teamed with fellow sophomore sensation Keaton Wallace– who averaged 20.2 points per game – to form the nation’s highest scoring backcourt. In his two-year career, Jackson ranks ninth in UTSA history with 1,197 points (20.6 points per game). 

The University Life Awards recognize outstanding students, student organizations, staff and faculty for their contributions to the quality of student life at UTSA. The awards, coordinated by the Student Government Association, are presented annually during the spring semester.
