From the Cayman Islands Auditor General’s Office

Auditor General, Sue Winspear, attended the 23rd Commonwealth Auditors General Conference in New Delhi, India last month.

She joined 74 participants from 36 countries at the conference, which focused on fostering partnerships for capacity development in public audit, with two main conference sub themes on leveraging technology and environmental audit.

Sessions on the conference sub theme “leveraging technology” were chaired by Professor Mussa Assad, the Auditor General of Tanzania, and Ms Winspear was one of the “best practice” presenters on this theme. She shared how the Cayman Islands Audit Office uses technology in its audit practice, with the other chosen presenters coming from South Africa, Kenya, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and the UK.

Delegates also heard from Shri Arun Jaitley, the Indian Minister for Finance, Corporate Affairs and Defence, who gave an overview of the Indian economy that focused on its strengths and recent initiatives including measures to widen the tax base.

The Finance Minister then sponsored a cultural night where Ms Winspear was proud to represent the Cayman Islands, by wearing the Caymanian national costume (with thanks to Ms. Zeta Bodden for its loan).

Finally, at the conclusion of the conference, the 25 Auditors General in attendance were honoured to have an audience with the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, at the Presidential Palace.

The Commonwealth Auditors General have met once every three years since the 1950s, to share best practice in public audit by countries of the Commonwealth who mainly use the “Westminster” style of Government.
