Appleby First Platinum Sponsor of Cayman Islands DG’s 5K Challenge

Offshore law firm Appleby has stepped up to be the first-ever platinum sponsor of the Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge.

The firm, which has supported the walk/run as a gold sponsor since 2015, has this year doubled its sponsorship to $10,000.

“We have been involved with the Deputy Governor’s 5K walk/run for the past couple of events and our elevation to platinum sponsorship has been as a result of its success and year-on-year growth,” said Bryan Hunter, managing partner of Appleby (Cayman) Ltd.

Appleby has 10 offices around the world, with some 80 staff in the Cayman Islands where, with origins in 1945, it is the oldest legal practice in the jurisdiction.

“The DG’s 5K Challenge enables our staff to participate in a fun event where we have a strong presence, as well as providing the opportunity for them to meet with friends and strengthen relations with many of our clients who are also involved,” said Mr. Hunter.

Led by Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, the annual walk/run this year aims to raise $60,000 for the YMCA of the Cayman Islands.

The money will go towards building a “ropes challenge course” in Grand Cayman, which will provide an alternative to classroom-style learning in areas proven to increase self-esteem, confidence and team-building skills.

This facility will offer participants with practical examples of ways to improve communication, awareness of themselves and others, and to gain leadership skills. In addition, the course will allow participants to overcome fears, insecurities, depression, and anti-social behaviour.

“We are very happy that Appleby took up the challenge to be our first new, exclusive platinum sponsor,” said Mr. Manderson. “This huge donation of $10,000 is a significant boost towards our target. We thank Mr. Hunter and his team for their generosity and support for a tremendous cause.”

This year’s event gold sponsors, giving $5,000 each, are Butterfield, Dart, Davenport Development, EY Cayman and Estera. The list of silver and bronze sponsorships, along with all other categories, has still to be finalised and announced. The DG’s 5K Challenge brings together civil servants, private sector employees and members of the public in a fitness and fundraising challenge. It is part of Mr. Manderson’s vision to have a healthier, more active and more socially engaged civil service, while benefitting charitable organisations and initiatives in the Cayman Islands.

The 2017 DG’s 5K Challenge is being held on Sunday, 23 April on Cayman Brac and at onSunday, 30 April on Grand Cayman. The event, in which participants can either walk or run, is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness.

Entrance is $25 for ages 18 and older and $10 for 17 and younger. Full details and registration are on www.caymanactive.com/dg5k.
