An 84-year-old woman may be evicted from her California veterans home if she continues to hold Bible studies, Christian Headlines reported.

Artis Breau moved into the home nine years ago and has provided  voluntary Bible study to residents ever since.

However, last week the widow received notification from the California Department of Veterans Affairs that she could be evicted from the home if she continued with the Bible studies, according to her lawyer.

The notice stems from an incident last September when one of the residents who attended the Bible studies claimed to have lost sleep following a discussion with Breau about heaven and hell, the Pacific Justice Institute said. The resident claimed it was a form of elder abuse and emotional abuse.

The home subsequently suspended Breau’s volunteer status indefinitely amid ongoing investigations and, although the elderly woman is yet to be interviewed about the alleged complaint, she has remained barred from volunteering in any official role.

Last week the Pacific Justice Institute received an email from the California Department of Veterans Affairs stating that Breau could face eviction if she did not halt her Bible studies.

Pacific Justice Institute Attorney Matthew McReynolds, who has been representing Breau, said the ordeal was shameful.

“Throughout this process, we have been deeply disturbed not only by the lack of constitutional guidelines, ineptitude, and lack of due process in the investigation, but even more by the notion that discussing religious views on the eternal state of the soul is somehow elder abuse or emotional abuse.” he said.

Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute added that the “shocking attack from the State” against Breau’s religious convictions was disturbing.

“The State seeks to punish Artis based on non-existent directives, and deprive her of a personal ministry to the veterans who have benefited from her religious services for years,” he noted. “Artis isn’t fighting just for herself, but for the Gospel and for the residents who are unable to fight for themselves against the State’s attempted intimidation.”Related Stories:
