Cayman Islands Mobile Voting Begins Tuesday, 16 May
The Elections Office reminds that mobile voting starts at 19 locations, one in each electoral district, from Tuesday, 16 May 2017 and ends on Friday, 19 May 2017. The polling stations will be open from 8 am to 2 pm on the four days.
The mobile voting application, Form C, is available on www.elections.ky and must be returned to the Elections Office by 12 May, 2017.
Mobile voting is conducted to enable two groups of voters, in particular, to cast their ballots:
Electors who are unable, or likely to be unable, to go in person to a polling station. In the case of persons in hospital, rest homes, the elderly, visually-impaired persons or others with a physical disability, an Elections Office mobile team will visit the elector’s residence.
Electors who are unable to go in person to the polling station because of the general nature of their occupation, service or employment. This includes all volunteers working Election Day. In these cases, the elector should go to the fixed mobile voting location on the specific days listed below.

Consolidated Water posts 1Q profit
GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (AP) _ Consolidated Water Co. (CWCO) on Wednesday reported first-quarter profit of $2.6 million.
The Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands-based company said it had profit of 18 cents per share.
The developer and operator of desalination plants posted revenue of $15.7 million in the period.
Consolidated Water shares have risen 6 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $11.50, a decline of 21 percent in the last 12 months.

‘Mama’ as we called her was so quiet and sweet
To hug and kiss her was really a treat.
She was fat like mothers of her day you see
Having nine healthy children she was pleased as could be.
She never wandered far from home – no way,
She kept watch for our return each and every day
Anxious that we’d each eat the food she’d prepared
With enough left for the less fortunate we always shared.
Mama loved her garden and we could always find her there

Cayman Islands Police request public assistance to locate Honda Accord stolen yesterday evening, 10 May
Just past 2AM this morning, 11 May, police responded to a report of a vehicle discovered stolen from the parking lot of the Marriott Hotel on West Bay Road. The owner last saw the vehicle at 7PM yesterday evening, 10 May, and discovered it missing at 1AM.
The vehicle details are as follows:

Model: Accord
Year: 2002
Colour: Silver
As the vehicle had just arrived on island yesterday, there were no registration plates on the vehicle.

Investigation into 6 January 2017 Incident and Death of Norval Barrett Concluded; No Criminal Prosecution to Be Undertaken
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has ruled that no criminal prosecution would be pursued in connection with the death of Mr. Norval Barrett, of Jamaica, during a police operation in the early hours of 6 January 2017.
This ruling follows the conclusion of a full and independent investigation conducted by detectives from the Bermuda Police Service, whose involvement was requested by Commissioner of Police, Derek Byrne, just after the incident.
Police personnel directly involved in the incident have been returned to full and active duty.
The matter has now been referred to the HM Coroner’s office for inquest proceedings.
Voter ID Cards Distribution Saturday, 13 May 2017
Elections officials will distribute Voter Registration Cards this Saturday, 13 May 2017, at two venues as follows:
North Side Clinic from 9 am to 12 noon and
Elections Office ground floor on Smith Road from 9 am to 4 pm.
The new cards replace previously issued voter IDs. Persons picking up their cards should show a valid form of official identification such as a Drivers Licence, Passport or work ID.

COLLEGE STATION — TDI-Brooks International, Inc. has been selected to perform three site surveys and an Environmental Baseline project in the Caribbean. Two well sites are at a depth of approximately 140 m and a third well site lies in 650 m water. The project is to be completed within May 2017 for wells to be drilled in July 2017.
TDI-Brooks’ multi-purpose vessel R/V Proteus will conduct the series of site, environmental baseline and habitat assessment surveys utilizing Sidescan, Magnetometer, Multi-beam and Subbottom Profiling. The R/V Proteus is a multi-use vessel suited for a wide variety of oceanographic research duties, fully outfitted for Geotechnical Coring/CPT, Environmental Baseline Survey (EBS), Surface Geochemical Exploration (SGE), Heat Flow (HF) and related projects.
Cayman Islands Annual Economic Surveys End Friday (May 12th)
Business and non-profit organizations have until the end of business day Friday, May 12,
2017, to submit their completed annual business survey questionnaires to the Economics and Statistics Office (ESO). The annual Balance of Payment and System of National Accounts questionnaires were emailed, mailed or hand-delivered from March 27-April 4, 2017.
The surveys cover establishments operating in the private and public sectors in the Cayman Islands, including wholesale and retail trade, accommodation services, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, insurance providers, banks, realtors and business service providers.
ESO officials emphasize that the surveys are confidential in accordance with the Statistics Law, and will be used exclusively by ESO for statistical purposes. No individual information will be released to parties outside of ESO, and survey results will be presented in aggregate form. ESO survey data are exempted from Freedom of Information (FOI).
In view of the wide use of the survey data, not only by local players but also by global investors, it is critical that the survey questionnaires be completed accurately and returned to ESO. The data will be used to estimate the total value of goods and services produced by the different industries in the Cayman Islands, and to measure total payments to and receipts from the rest of the world. Analysts and investors need such information in determining the economic viability of the Cayman Islands as a place to invest. They are also used to monitor the economic health of specific sectors and their contribution to economic growth in the Cayman Islands.

Emergency declared at US Hanford nuclear site after tunnel collapse

Washington: A section of an underground storage tunnel in a plutonium uranium extraction plant collapsed at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation on Tuesday, prompting authorities to declare emergency at the Washington state site.
Officials were alerted of a cave-in of a 20 feet section of a tunnel that is hundreds of feet.

More regional countries called to support Caribbean Court of Justice says T&T President

Trinidad & Tobago, May 8, 2017 – T&T’s President, the Hon. Anthony Carmona, is of the belief that forging together as a united Caribbean front with the Caribbean Court of Justice, CCJ to be the court of last resort is a step toward fortifying our Caribbean identity.
These remarks were made by Carmona during a presentation on Redefining Caribbean Pride for the 21st Century Youth at UWI, Cave Hill Campus. President Carmona was lamenting on the fact that some countries are yet to replace the Privy Council with the CCJ. At present, only Barbados, Guyana, Dominica and Belize have accepted the CCJ as their final authority in legal matters.
As for the majority of CARICOM members, including Trinidad and Tobago, President Carmona believes that they are all causing a downfall “that mitigates against the spirit of the Caribbean integration movement”.

Cayman Islands fireman found guilty
Fabian Oliver Thompson (34), a Cayman Islands fireman with the Cayman Islands Fire Service, was found guilty Monday (8) of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to resist arrest.
In January last year police officers went to the home of Thompson (34) in Bodden Town with a warrant in his father’s name relating to a drug investigation. When officers tried to search Thompson, he dodged out of their way and jumped over a fence. Officers then saw what they believed was a real weapon in his hand. They tasered Thompson as he jumped the fence and he stumbled as he was hit. Thompson, however, was able to remove the wire probes and fled into the bushes.
A warrant out was issued for his arrest, and three days later Thompson, who has no previous convictions, gave himself telling police he did not possess a gun. No gun was ever found.
However, in court numerous police officers testified that they saw Thompson with a gun. The court Footage was shown from the Taser-cam and it looked as if Thompson was holding a handgun as he made his escape.
Justice Swift, in finding Thompson guilty said he was satisfied, from the evidence presented the defendant was carrying an imitation firearm.
He was remanded in custody until June 1st for sentencing.
Jamaican killed in Cayman crash identified

The police in The Cayman Islands have identified the Jamaican who was killed in last week’s two vehicle crash which also left three foreigners dead.
The police say he is 24 year old Shanroy Delapena.
Delapena was driving a Honda motor car when the mishap occurred.
An 11-year-old boy, who was sitting in the trunk of the vehicle when it smashed head-on with another car in East End on Tuesday night, has been released from the hospital.
The other survivor from the crash remains at George Town hospital in a stable condition.
According to reports in the UK press, the three elderly visitors killed on impact came from Surrey, in the South of England.
They were travelling in a Kia Rio when it was hit by the Honda.

Granny, 72, on gun charge in Trinidad

TRINIDAD EXPRESS – A 72-year-old woman of Phase 2, La Horquetta, will appear in the Arima Magistrates’ Court on Monday, charged with the possession of a Ruger .9mm pistol.
The woman was arrested by officers of the La Horquetta Police Station. The officers allegedly found the gun during the execution of a search warrant at the woman’s home last Friday night.
A warrant has since been issued for the arrest of the woman’s 42year-old son, who resides at the same address.

T&T cops stop gunman on his way to commit murder

TRINIDAD EXPRESS – POLICE say they arrested a gangster who was on his way to Charlieville to kill a rival last Friday night.
Officers of the Northern Division Task Force were tipped off and went to Pierre Road, Charlieville, where they stopped and searched the man.
The suspect, police said, was allegedly found with a Glock 22 pistol in his possession.
He allegedly also had in possession an extended magazine, outfitted with 22 rounds of ammunition, as well as a ski mask.
The man was arrested and is expected to be brought before a Chaguanas Magistrate on Monday.
Officers believe that the suspect was on his way to kill a member of a rival gang in the Felicity area.

Postal, Mobile Voting Application Deadline is 12 May
The Elections Office is alerting electors that the deadline for applying to vote by Postal Ballots or by using Mobile Voting is Friday, 12 May 2017, a week away.
Postal voting is available to persons who will be or are likely to be off island on Elections Day, Wednesday, 24 May 2017.
Applicants will need to complete a Form B application which can be downloaded on the Elections Office website www.elections.ky or alternatively, collected from the Elections Office at 150, Smith Road Centre, 2nd Floor, George Town.
The application along with proof for travel may be submitted via email, preferably, or hand delivered to the Elections Office.

Cayman Drama Society is holding auditions on Tuesday 16th May 2017 at 7:30pm for the Caribbeanplay “SISTAHS” which will be presented 7th to 23rd September 2017. The play will be produced and directed by Paul de Freitas. It requires a cast of four Caribbean women in their 30s and a female teenager – ideally around 16 years old. Successful actors will have a Caribbean background and appropriate language and role nuances.

Cayman Islands Triple C’s Ena Merren Memorial 5K Walk/Run – “A Walk Through Time”
On Saturday, May 13th, Triple C School will be holding a 5K Walk/Run. All Triple C parents, staff, students, alumni, friends, walkers and runners of all ages are invited to come out to support this event. All proceeds raised from this event will go towards beautifying the Early Childhood Education (Pre-School through Kindergarten) & Elementary playgrounds and the Ena Merren Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The route for the 5k/3M event will start at the Triple C School and will take walkers to the intersection of Mulberry Dr. & Walkers Rd and back to the school. Adult Pre-registration is KY$20 and will be KY$25 on the event day. The Child/Student Registration (8-18 yrs) is $15 and the “Little Sprinters” registration is KY$10. Each registered “Little Sprinter” will receive a special goodie bag. All registered participants will receive a 75th Triple C Anniversary keepsake t-shirt (while supplies last), with a breakfast and prize drawing ticket.

Cayman Islands names rugby team to play USA South
The Cayman Rugby Football Union has named a squad of 23 players to represent them in its next Rugby Americas North match against USA South.
The away game will be played on 14 May. This is the first of three on the calendar for the RHSW Cayman Islands NMT XVs Squad, ahead of games against Bermuda on 3 June and at home for Health City Big Game 8 on 17 June.
Chris Kennedy will captain the squad announced Sunday. Ben Blair was named as the vice-captain.

Cayman Islands voter ID distribution set to begin
The Elections Office will begin issuing its new voter registration cards on Tuesday, 18 April 2017. Persons may also collect the cards from the Elections Office, located at the Smith Road Centre, 150 Smith Road, or from various locations listed below.
The new cards will replace all previously issued voter identification (IDs). Officials will cease issuing cards on Friday, 19 May 2017.
To receive their card persons will need to show a valid form of official identification, such as a driver’s licence, passport or work ID. Those with questions should email [email protected], tel. 949-8047 or visit www.elections.ky.

Builders Board Registration – Phase 1 – Now Open
Contractors in the Cayman Islands, specifically general contractors, building- and civil-contractors, are reminded that their formal registration period is now open, through the end of April, as required by The Builders Board Law.
For more information, and to apply for a Builders Board licence, visit the Planning.ky website, or call 949 7900.
Residential contractors and trade contractors should not apply at this time, as their application period will take place in coming months.
Companies that are not registered by the end of September 2017 will be unable to have permits or request inspections.
Cayman Islands Elections Office offering postal and mobile Balloting
The Elections Office reminds registered voters that the period during which they may request postal ballots or mobile voting is underway, and will continue until close of business on Friday, 12 May 2017.
Persons who will be away from the Cayman Islands on Election Day may request a postal ballot by filling out form B, available on www.elections.ky, at https://portal.elections.ky/files/downloads/forms/2016/FORMB.pdf. The completed form along with proof of travel plans may be emailed to [email protected].
Those who will be in the Cayman Islands but unable to physically attend the polls, may apply for mobile voting using Form C, also available from www.elections.ky at https://portal.elections.ky/files/downloads/forms/2016/FORMC.pdf. Elections Office polling staff will either visit successful applicants in person, or facilitate their vote before polling day at an early voting station.

National Gallery offers guided tours to enhance your experience and offer memorable moments. The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) has a temporary access road while work is being done to improve site access as well as develop the front sculpture gardens. The access road is located off of Lawrence Boulevard and passes through the F.J. Harquail Cultural Grounds (Harquail Theatre). About the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands
Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is the country’s leading visual arts museum and education centre, charged with promoting and encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in the Cayman Islands. This mission is achieved through exhibitions, education/outreach programmes, school tours, community festivals, and ongoing research projects. Holding up to six exhibitions annually at our central exhibition space, and satellite venues around Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, the curatorial team strives to create a balance between exhibitions of quality Caymanian artwork with art from further afield. This is achieved by working with a broad cross-section of artists and ranging from site-specific work to more traditional gallery-based projects.
NGCI is at the forefront of visual arts education in the Cayman Islands hosting 25+ education and outreach programmes monthly, across all three islands. These programmes aim to capture every age group in our community from the youngest pre-schoolers to senior citizens, in addition to marginalized members of our community. They combine arts education with enriching creative experiences which foster creativity, help build self-esteem, and provide effective and invaluable explorations of culture, cultural heritage, national identity and community values.
NGCI Site & Facility
The new National Gallery building is a 9,000 sq. ft. facility situated on the western side of the Esterley Tibbetts Bypass, close to Camana Bay town centre and adjacent to the Harquail Theatre. The new development is home to two temporary exhibition areas, an art studio, library, auditorium, sculpture garden, Art Café and Gift Shop, and a permanent gallery for the Cayman Islands National Art Collection.
As part of the National Gallery’s long-term business plan, an auditorium and multi-purpose event space have been incorporated into the design providing flexible venue options for conferences.
