The protest will be staged in over 100 countries and governments all over the world, many of whom are preventing Monsanto from attempting to control their food industries and create havoc for their farming communities. The EU countries are particularly vocal on this issue and are rejecting patent applications for GMOS from being filed by Monsanto.

Jamaica is particularly vulnerable to this growing threat as we already import US$1b of food which has damaged our agro-producers and is un-affordable. Further, we have limited, if any, control over the possible importation of GMOs or other harmful foods into the country.

All are invited to attend and join this protest for developing our own food security programme. We expect to hear from concerned Ministers of Government in Agriculture, Foreign Trade, Tourism and members of the public via live radio newscasts on HOT 102 during the morning on this issue. IRIE FM will also assist during the period of the demonstration and beyond

COME WITH YOUR RED & WHITE POSTERS – SAY “NO GMOS”

COME WITH YOUR JAMAICAN COLOURS – SAY “NO 2 GMOS!”

COME OCCUPY HALF WAY TREE (HWT) TO SAVE OUR FARMERS AND OUR FOOD!

The March will be held by Consumer Care. The Food Hygiene Bureau fully supports the work of this organization in its mandate for a safe food supply for our nation. The Food Hygiene Bureau mission to “Protect Consumer Health” view this march as pivotal in this change!

In 2012 Jamaica imported food bill was 1billion US dollars, 90% of that is GMO or has GMO ingredients in them e.g. soy products, corn, processed foods including Baby formulas, ice cream, cows milk etc. Majority of our imports are from countries where GM engineering and crops are allowed, e.g. USA and Canada and yet we have no labeling regulations or checks being carried out at our Ports of entry for this important control. The Food Hygiene Bureau calls on our Government to protect our islands food supply, to promote our traditional crops and support our farmers in producing locally grown Jamaican foodstuffs and therefore reducing the large food imported bill. This can be achieved through taxes, checks at our ports and mandatory labeling of all food containing GM ingredients both locally produced as well as imported.

It’s important to empower people with information they need to make their own healthy choices. People have the right to make decisions based on accurate transparency in labeling. We believe knowledge is power. We implore all Jamaicans to support the march tomorrow through Consumer care and demonstrate peacefully for a change in our Food Safety Policy that allows GM ingredients and GM foods and the possibility of seeds importation without controls!

When: May 23rd, 2013

Where: Half Way Tree, Kingston, Jamaica, W.I.

Why should you Care about Genetically Modified Foods

Genetically engineering of foods….The ability to change the DNA of our food crops through gene manipulation and therefore change the nature of our food nutritional value. Monsanto’s aim is to control the world food supply with the belief to us that we have no choice as food security is at risk and if we do not adopt this technology we will be in a state of famine where we will not be able to feed ourselves. This is far from the truth as studies have shown that where countries have harness GM crops, they have suffered more severely.

The technology of Genetically engineered crops have the ability to change the natural fauna and is a threat to our natural environment. Recent studies have shown serious health effects even for cattle who consumer the crop leaves of GM foods and that farmers will become seed dependent and will have to give undertaking to Monsanto for risks arising from GM crop cultivation on their farm.

Jamaican cuisine has been described as the eclectic mix of Taíno, African, European, Indian and Chinese cuisines, a veritable melting pot of delectable gastronomy. There is something in that piece of ground called Jamaica or Xaymaca that gives a fresh, distinctive, full-flavoured taste to foods that are grown in its soil. Local creativity and the rich variety of foods, spices and herbs grown on the Island allows Jamaica to offer to the world a truly delicious, satisfying and healthy culinary experience, that is rich in the use of farm fresh ingredients and health-preserving herbs such as ginger, garlic, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon and “scotch bonnet” hot peppers. Tourist and locals travel distances near and far to experience this delightful and healthy culinary tradition.

GM foods entering Jamaica and then being commercialized in Jamaica threaten our export market potential to the rest of the world outside of the USA and Canada. At a time when we are being encouraged to export to the EU, but the EU doesn’t accept GM Foods!!! Our tourism industry is also at risk as more and more markets are being encouraged from countries outside of Canada and the US!! What then of Jamaica land we love?!!!

Jamaica needs to join the following countries where GM foods are banned and where mandatory labeling of GM foods and ingredients are in place:

Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Portugal, Spain, Greece, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria, Brazil, Bhutan and Paraguay.

Join us on Saturday the 24th May at Half Way Tree Road, Kingston in support of this inaugural event which sets to change our nation’s diet and our country’s agricultural and tourism capability. Without your support we will not make history in the ban of Genetically Modified foods from our diet.

The 2012-2013 football season is coming to a close and on Sunday, 26 May

2013 the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) will host a first of its kind contest between Cayman Premier League and Foster’s First Division teams in the Senior Men’s FA Cup final.

Roma USC has made an excellent run to the grand finale by beating three Premier League teams – North Side FC, Tigers FC and George Town SC. Roma now only has the Premier League Champions, Bodden Town FC left to face. Bodden Town FC has also had a hard road to the championship match, beating out Foster’s First Division Champions, Sunset FC and the always hard to beat Elite SC.

Bodden Town FC has won the Cayman Premier League for the first time in CIFA’s history and wants to seal its brilliant season performance by winning the double crown. The team is also considered the favourite by featuring the three time in a row Cayman Premier League Top Scorer Dwayne “Gaza” Wright, but nothing can be said before the time comes as Roma USC has also surprised the football community by beating the traditional George Town SC in the semi-final.

Sunday, 26 May’s match will be nothing short of exciting with these two teams fighting for the title. The match will take place at Annex Field in George Town at

7:00pm after the Under 15 Girls FA Cup Final between Elite SC and Scholars ISC

at 3:30pm and the Under 15 Boys FA Cup Final between Future SC and

With the stock market making new highs, it’s difficult to be a risk manager; the party pooper, the wet blanket.

But when artificial stimulus underlies the economy – and the structural issues with a debt crisis in Europe and the US are being ignored while the problem is not getting any younger – it is at these moments the risk manager speaks common sense. Logical, mathematical, common sense.

Take sovereign bond fund manager Paul Singer, speaking at the Ira Sohn conference. He is likely not to be the most popular person at the cocktail party if he keeps talking the truth about unfunded liabilities moving the US debt to GDP ratio to near 500% — essentially a point of insolvency. That’s not popular, happy stock talk – but it is critical reality we must face as risk managers.

In this issue we take a look at the debt crisis from a European perspective with the full interview with institutional consultant Dr. Bob Swarup. It is my opinion Dr. Swarup is speaking years ahead of his time in this interview, but it’s hard to say when this bubble will burst. It is for this reason that brief but stunning comments from Greenrock Research interest rate strategist Bob Southard are so interesting. On page 23, he has a 1 ½ year time horizon for a market price adjustment, but says the first signs will be seen in the currency market – through a devaluation of as much as 35% — not along the yield curve, as has been a predominate thought in debt crisis modeling.

This all reminds me of an interesting conversation that took place among a group of financial fiduciaries.

“The underpinnings of many asset markets are based largely on stimulus. To many this represents known risk,” was one thought, which was magnified in public statements at both the recent Ira Sohn Conferences and SALT thought leadership confabs. The conversation quickly switched to Jeffery Gundlach’s recent comments on CNBC, where he essentially lifted the curtain from behind the wizard of stimulus, noting that “stimulus was in its eighth inning,” and that it was losing its effectiveness the more it is depended on to “create” needed growth. These comments were sandwiched with Stanley Druckenmiller thoughts that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is engaging in the exact wrong strategy at this moment in history. Why economists and certain academics don’t see the damage quantitative interference has in the credibility of the yield curve is curious.

“Central Banks entering the yield curve to an unseen extent – as much as 50% of the market in some cases – is market manipulation which always has a history of failure. It is also logical to assume that at some point the fundamentals underlying the market might find their own gravity?”

With this as a backdrop, one might do well to take the advice of author Bob Rice, whose book, The Alternative Answer is needed now more than ever. Mr. Rice has a strong grasp of the absurd economic fundamentals and points to real alternative solutions in his new book, which is reviewed on page 13.

This issue of Opalesque Futures Intelligence looks at other interesting topics. Profile and analysis takes place of Campbell & Company – an old line trend follower with a newly emerging algorithm that is transitioning leadership. Can a strategy be passed from generation to generation? We consider this in Campbell but also a much lesser known volatility trader – T2 Associates, which is essentially a Silicon Valley mathematician who systematized the counter-trend volatility trading tactics of his floor trader father – with the operative word emphasis on volatility. Then we consider managed futures trend follower Cole Wilcox, who made a crusade for Tesla – one of three fund products he offers – a household name through a strong media showing.

This publication is dedicated to real alternatives – those designed to perform when it matters most. I hope you find this issue useful. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to reach out.

The garage sale takes place on Saturday June 1st at Kirk Supermarket’s parking lot from 6am – 9am.

DMS encourages the community to do a little spring cleaning at home and to come out and participate. It’s historically been a fun and busy event with approximately 30 people registered to sell and lots and lots of shoppers looking for good bargains! Participating vendors contribute $25 to reserve their space to sell for the morning and they get to keep whatever they earn for the day. To raise additional awareness DMS Broadcasting donates a campaign leading up to the day and broadcasts live on the day of the event. Saxon MG and DMS staff also coordinate a booth of donated items to sell and raise money for the shelter.

This year an exciting game of Adoption Lotto will also be taking place during the garage sale. There will be a bin of fun cuddly numbered plush cats and dogs which you can purchase for $5. Each will have a corresponding random prize assigned to it. You might win a sunset cruise by Red Sail Sports or you might win a lollipop! It’s all luck of the draw and part of the fun! The DMS Gives Back committee is currently looking for business members of the community to make donations of prizes to support these efforts both small and large prizes are needed.

The DMS Gives Back committee raised $1250 last year through booth registration fees, selling donated items and the raffle. DMS then generously matched the funds collected, culminating in a total of $2500 donated for the Cayman Islands Humane Society. The committee’s event and charity group coordinator Mindy Kimball said “At DMS, we recognize that corporate responsibility and success go hand in hand. Annually, we make substantial donations to various community and civic causes, as well as encourage our employees to be active corporate citizens through volunteering and coordinating events like this. We have had a fabulous response to this event and look forward to raising even more funds this year for Cayman Islands Humane Society and their efforts.” The funds raised from this year’s garage sale will be utilized for the Humane Society’s latest spay and neuter campaign initiative which DMS is proud to support.

Please contact ebodden@dms.com.ky to reserve your space, donate raffle prizes or for more information.
