Cayman Islands recall of Orajel Baby and Spam

From Foster’s Food Fair

Foster’s Food Fair-IGA would like to announce that Church and Dwight has issued a voluntary recall on Orajel baby teething products containing benzocaine due to serious safety concerns as recommended by the information from the Food and Drug Administration.

Benzocaine is a white odorless, crystalline powder used as a local an aesthetic or numbing agent as it is known to most. It is used to reduce pain or discomfort in the body, mouth or throat. In children under the age of two years, benzocaine can cause a condition known as methemoglobinemia. This is where the oxygen levels in the blood are abnormally low. Symptoms of this condition include a gray or blueish appearance in the lips and nail beds, as well as rapid breathing and an elevated heart rate. In some cases, this condition can be fatal.
