KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Friday January 31, 2014, CMC – A British national is expected to be sentenced on Monday after he pleaded guilty to drug charges after the authorities discovered a quantity of cocaine in products bottled by the local manufacturer, St. Vincent Brewery Limited.

The police withdrew two other charges against Nathan Smith after discovering the cocaine concealed in three cans bearing carrying the labels “Hairoun Beer”, “Vita Malt” and “Presidente Beer”.

Smith had pleaded guilty to three other drug charges and will most likely be sentenced on Monday following the trial of co-accused, Lisa Hooper of Campden Park, St. Vincent.

Smith was charged with exporting 1.235 grammes of cocaine on July 24, 2013 from  the E.T. Joshua Airport at Arnos Vale. He was also charged with possession and with intent to supply.

The British national was also accused of agreeing with Hooper and others of attempting to export illegal drugs as well engage in illegal drug trafficking.

Smith pleaded guilty to three of the charges when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Sonya Young at the Serious Offences Court after the two others were withdrawn. The prosecution had asked that his sentence be deferred until Monday.

Hooper, who faces similar charges, maintained her not guilty pleas and will be tried on Monday. The prosecution says it intends to call six witnesses in her trial.
