Cayman Islands Turtle Farm has been in operation for over 40 years but last month they had the first incident of its kind. Â The death of 229 young turtles.
A break in a main pipe that supplies sea water broke under the Northwest Point road by the farm and when the pipe was being repaired the back-up system failed. This affected the water supply to several tanks.
Officials said the turtles that died represent less than 5% of the population at the farm.
The farm has roughly 490 turtles for breeding and more than 7,000 as part of a release programme.
